Chapter 95: Invite Again
At the Baldry house, Kaitlin was fuming. The events at school still had her seething, and she couldn’t shake off her anger. Without thinking twice, she headed to the study to confront Cason about it.
As she approached the door, she overheard Cason on the phone. When she heard Ainsley’s name, her curiosity piqued, and she leaned closer.
“Do you have time this weekend? Mathew hasn’t had much of an appetite these days. He really wants to see you. Can you come and visit him?” Cason’s voice was gentle and calm.
“Sure, Ainsley. I’ll pick you up,” Cason continued.
Ainsley?
Kaitlin’s eyes narrowed with fury. She couldn’t believe it. Cason, still talking to Ainsley? The thought made her blood boil. Hadn’t Cason always despised Ainsley? Yet here he was, speaking to her so kindly. His tone was softer than Kaitlin had ever heard him use with anyone.
Fuming, she stormed downstairs to find Kaliyah, who was busy cutting fruit. Without a word, she downed two glasses of water, trying to quell her frustration.
Kaliyah noticed her distress and came over. “What’s wrong, Kaitlin? Are you feeling down?”
Kaitlin, trying to hide her agitation, asked, “Kaliyah, has your relationship with Cason been off lately? Have you two had an argument?”
Kaliyah looked taken aback, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. She gave a strained smile. “What are you talking about? Did Cason say something to you?”
“No, no. I was just wondering. When I went to the study earlier, I overheard Cason talking to Ainsley. He said he wanted to go visit Mathew with her.” Kaitlin paused, her voice dripping with concern. “Don’t you think it’s odd? Cason’s always taken you with him to visit Mathew, yet now he’s contacting Ainsley directly.”
Kaliyah’s expression darkened. “Maybe Mathew doesn’t like me very much. He’s been losing his appetite, and Cason is probably just worried. It makes sense that he’d want Ainsley to help. After all, Grandpa has always liked her.”
Kaitlin wasn’t convinced. She leaned in closer, her tone urgent. “Kaliyah, you can’t just let it go like that. If you keep giving in, Cason might use this as an excuse to visit Mathew—and Ainsley—every time! This will not end well for you.”
Kaliyah’s face fell. “But if Mathew doesn’t like me…”
Kaitlin stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. “That’s exactly why you need to go. The more Mathew dislikes you, the more you should show him your sincerity. Don’t let this go. If you want to keep Cason, you have to act.”
She paused, her eyes flickering with a sly glint. “However, I don’t want to see Cason and Ainsley together. Kaliyah, I’m helping you.”
Kaliyah nodded, grateful but still uncertain. “Thank you, Kaitlin.”
Kaitlin smiled darkly. “But I need a favor in return.”
“What is it?”
“From now on, when Cason goes to visit Mathew, you need to tell me immediately. I need to know where they are, especially if Ainsley’s involved.”
“Okay,” Kaliyah agreed, tightening her grip on the fruit in her hand.
Weekend Visit
Ainsley arrived at the Baldry’s old house, her bag packed and ready. Manuel had taken Serina to her hometown, and Ainsley had decided to visit Mathew today.
When she walked inside, she was surprised to see Cason there too.
“Mr. Baldry, you seem surprisingly free today. You’ve always been so busy with work and social events,” Ainsley teased, a playful smile on her lips.
“I wanted to spend some time with Grandpa,” Cason replied, forcing a smile.
Mathew, sitting comfortably in his chair, lit up when he saw Ainsley. “Aisy, you’re here! The butler just brought in a lot of fruit—you’re in luck.”
Ainsley smiled warmly. “Mathew, I heard you haven’t been eating well lately. Is that true?”
Mathew raised an eyebrow and shot a glare at Cason. “Who said that? Someone makes me so angry, I can’t eat!”
Cason let out a strained laugh. “Grandpa, really?”
At that moment, the door opened, and Kaitlin walked in.
She approached Mathew with a forced smile. “Mathew, I came to see you.”
Mathew barely glanced at her before turning his attention elsewhere. “You still have the guts to show up? After everything you did to Ainsley?”
Kaitlin tried to mask her discomfort, putting on a sad expression. “Mathew, I know I was wrong.”
Ainsley’s gaze shifted coldly to Kaitlin, then to Cason. If I had known Kaitlin was coming, I wouldn’t have come at all.
Mathew was having none of it. “Do you even know how Ainsley treated you? You’re ungrateful. Apologize to her now, or leave. Don’t ever come back to my place!”
Kaitlin shot Ainsley a look, then awkwardly extended the durian she had brought. “Ainsley, don’t be mad at me. I know I was wrong. I brought you this durian as an apology. Let’s open it together.”
Ainsley didn’t even look at the fruit. She could tell Kaitlin wasn’t apologizing sincerely. There was no way she’d fall for this.
Mathew, however, sighed. “Aisy, even if you won’t forgive Kaitlin, at least take the durian. I know she caused all this.”
Ainsley hesitated for a moment, but then, thinking of Mathew’s kindness, she took the durian. He had always treated her like his own granddaughter, and despite her feelings for Kaitlin, she couldn’t turn him down.
Ainsley moved to the side table to open the durian. The butler was in the kitchen, so no one was around to help.
Kaitlin saw her chance and quickly turned to Cason. “Cason, help Ainsley with the durian!”
Cason was puzzled. Didn’t Kaitlin hate Ainsley? Why was she suddenly being so generous? But he didn’t question it, walking over and handing Ainsley a pair of rubber gloves. He put on a pair as well, and together they began breaking open the durian.
As they worked together, Kaitlin sneaked to a corner and snapped a photo of them, carefully choosing an angle that would make the situation look more intimate than it was.
With a smirk, she sent the photo out, hoping to stir trouble. I wonder if Manuel will suspect something now. Let’s see what he thinks of Ainsley.
At the Gage Group
Manuel was deep in a meeting when his phone buzzed. He took it out, and the photo appeared on his screen. His heart sank as he saw the image of Ainsley and Cason working closely together, smiling as they opened the durian. The intimacy between them was unmistakable.
He waved for the meeting to stop, his face darkening. “Suspend the meeting,” he said coldly.
The room cleared out quickly, leaving Manuel alone. He couldn’t shake the feeling of betrayal that the photo had stirred in him. Why was Ainsley with Cason like that? The photo’s timestamp indicated that it was happening right now.
Are they together again?
