Chapter 39: Why Does He Come?
Kaitlin, despite Serina’s cold words, was unfazed. If anything, she seemed even more attentive than before, wearing an exaggerated smile. “Serina, you don’t have to be so harsh. Our families work together, after all. Why do you always feel the need to protect her?”
Serina stared at her, speechless. The overly sweet tone in Kaitlin’s voice sent a chill down her spine.
It wasn’t just Serina—Jenny, who was standing behind Kaitlin, looked equally taken aback, her eyes wide in disbelief, as if she had seen a ghost.
Serina, recovering from the unsettling vibe, crossed her arms and put on a stern expression. “Kaitlin, if you don’t leave now, don’t blame me for calling security.”
Kaitlin didn’t seem at all offended by the warning. Her smile remained plastered on her face as she stood up, unfazed by the obvious tension. “Since you’re so busy, I’ll let you get back to it.”
The audacity of the woman!
Kaitlin left without another word, and Serina let out a relieved sigh. She turned to Ainsley, still shaking her head. “Ainsley, do you think Kaitlin’s lost her mind?”
Ainsley, who had been quiet, looked thoughtful before finally shaking her head. “No, I know her. She’s not the type to keep quiet when she’s angry. She’s definitely planning something. I’m just not sure what.”
As Kaitlin and Jenny walked away, Jenny couldn’t help but ask, “Kaitlin, why were you being so… nice to Serina today? You’ve never tolerated her before.”
Kaitlin rolled her eyes, clearly impatient with Jenny’s confusion. “You don’t get it, do you? I have my reasons.”
In her mind, Kaitlin believed that Ainsley had won over a man like Manuel because she had gotten close to Serina. Kaitlin was determined not to let Ainsley have the upper hand. She was unmarried, still the darling of her family, and she wasn’t about to let a divorced woman hold a higher place than her. If she could somehow work her way into Serina’s good graces, she was certain she could win Manuel’s favor. That would be her victory—taking what Ainsley had.
But as she thought about her plan, a pang of jealousy suddenly gripped her when she noticed how Ainsley and Serina interacted, the two of them so effortlessly harmonious. The jealousy simmered, and Kaitlin couldn’t help but think to herself, Let’s wait and see. I’ll make my move soon enough.
The rest of the afternoon passed quickly with the influx of students registering for the quiz show. Ainsley was busy handling the registrations, and the number of sign-ups this year far surpassed those of the previous one. By the time the crowd began to thin out, it was already evening.
Serina stretched and glanced at Ainsley. “Ainsley, today’s my grandfather’s birthday. I need to head back early, so I won’t be going with you.”
Ainsley nodded, already organizing the forms. “Go on ahead. I’ll stay a little longer to clean up. I’ll be fine.”
Reluctantly, Serina left, and Ainsley was left to finish the last of the work. After carefully putting the registration forms away in her office drawer, she finally packed up her bag and made her way toward the gate.
As she approached the entrance, a Maserati parked in front of the gates caught her eye. The sleek car, with its polished exterior, was drawing the attention of several students. While there were a few wealthy students at the University of Washington, Maseratis were rare enough to make a significant impression.
Kaitlin, carrying her bag, walked out of the gate with Jenny, still gossiping about Ainsley. Suddenly, Jenny stopped mid-sentence, her eyes wide. “Kaitlin, is that your brother?”
Kaitlin froze. She followed Jenny’s gaze and saw him—her brother, Cason.
It was strange. Although Cason was her brother, he rarely made any effort to involve himself in her life. So why was he here? What could possibly bring him to the campus?
