Chapter 40: Mr. Baldry, Get Out of My Way
Jenny, her face filled with envy, couldn’t resist fawning over Kaitlin. “Kaitlin, your older brother is so sweet! I heard the CEO is always so busy, yet he made time to pick up his little sister!”
Kaitlin basked in the praise, her lips curling into a smug smile. She tossed her hair and replied, “Of course. My brother adores me. I’m his favorite.”
“Oh, Kaitlin, I really envy you. You’re not only beautiful, but your family is so impressive. And your brother—he’s so nice to you. I’ve never even sat in a Maserati before!” Jenny continued, her flattery obvious. She was already imagining how she would snap a few pictures once she was inside, planning to show them off to her old high school friends to make them jealous.
Kaitlin, pleased with the attention, sneered. “Well, look at you, acting all modest. I’ll ask my brother to give you a ride sometime.”
With that, she walked over to where Cason was waiting, her voice rising as she called out to him. “Cason! How come you have the time to pick me up today?” She deliberately made her voice louder, wanting the students nearby to hear. Kaitlin had never been so proud. Normally, a chauffeur would pick her up in a low-key Audi, but today, Cason was here in his Maserati. And she was going to milk it for all it was worth.
Cason spotted her and frowned, his face hardening. “Why haven’t you gone home yet?”
Kaitlin was taken aback by his cold tone. Her eyes darted to Jenny, who was watching with curiosity. Irritated, she tried to salvage the situation. “Cason, are you joking? Didn’t you come to pick me up?” She paused dramatically, then started walking toward him. “Cason!”
Before she could finish, Cason completely ignored her. He turned abruptly and marched toward the entrance, his stride purposeful.
“Ainsley!”
Kaitlin froze as she watched him move toward Ainsley, blocking her path. Her stomach churned with confusion and frustration. Her brother had never come to pick her up at work before—yet now, he was here because of Ainsley?
She shot Jenny a sharp glare. “What are you staring at? My brother’s busy with something else today. I’ll let you ride with me next time. I’ve never gone back on my word before.”
Jenny, sensing her chance to redeem herself, plastered on a smile. “Of course, I believe you, Kaitlin. But… why did your brother go after Ainsley? Didn’t you say he hated her?”
Kaitlin’s thoughts immediately turned to the events of the previous night. She was sure her brother had fallen for the rumors about Ainsley and Manuel. He must have come to confront Ainsley, perhaps to demand the house back.
A wicked smile spread across Kaitlin’s face. “None of your business. In any case, Ainsley won’t have it easy. Soon enough, I’ll be moving into a new villa—one much bigger than Serina’s little flat outside the campus.”
Ainsley, who had been walking toward the gate, stopped in her tracks when Cason suddenly blocked her way.
Her frown deepened. She had never understood this man before the divorce, and now, after everything that had happened, she understood him even less. She had run into him more times post-divorce than she had during their marriage, and each encounter only left her feeling more distant from the person he once was.
She stood there, her patience wearing thin. “Mr. Baldry, move out of my way.”
Cason looked down at her, clearly taken aback. “You didn’t talk to me like that before.”
Ainsley’s gaze was cold as she met his eyes. “Mr. Baldry, does Ms. Packer know you’re here? When we were together, you could never stop thinking about her. Now you’re with her—are you missing me?”
The words hung in the air, sharp and biting. There was no warmth, no nostalgia in her tone—just a blunt observation. She wasn’t interested in playing games, not anymore.
