Chapter 13: The Yates Family Underestimated Wynter
“I thought they were here for a medical consultation,” muttered Dom, looking at the group gathered outside the Harmony Community.
Wynter didn’t seem concerned. She quickly tapped out a message, declining the case. It wasn’t uncommon for people to come looking for medical help, many of them traveling from nearby cities and counties. Given that her biological parents were from Havenlight County, it wasn’t surprising Dom might have assumed they were related to that.
“Mr. Fisher, let’s head back. We don’t want Jackson and the others waiting too long,” Wynter suggested with a smile.
“Alright.” Dom nodded, a knowing grin on his face. The conversation was short, but it planted the seeds for a misunderstanding—one that would grow into something bigger.
Meanwhile, outside the Harmony Community, members of the Quinnell family were growing anxious. The Quinnell scions, always busy with their own commitments, were unable to stay.
Mr. Quinnell Senior, seated in the back of a luxury SUV with a Kingbourne license plate, sat with a scowl on his face. “Wasn’t it said that my little princess lives here? Why does everyone here claim they don’t know her?”
“I’ll double-check!” Ryan Lloyd, a portly man with a nervous demeanor, wiped the sweat off his brow as he answered quickly. “The people from Havenlight County suspect the Yates family might have mistaken Ms. Quinnell. I’ve sent someone to ask around—Ms. Quinnell might still be with the Yates family.”
Fabian’s brow furrowed, and he glared at Ryan. “Sent someone?” His voice was heavy with impatience. “I’ll go myself. Right now.”
Ryan immediately scrambled out of the car, as if to avoid Fabian’s frustration.
Fabian let out a frustrated cough. His health had been deteriorating for some time. The constant yearning to find his granddaughter had taken a toll on him, especially after a recent trip to Havenlight County that had worsened his condition with a lung infection.
Alec Hunter, the Quinnell family physician, spoke up, his voice calm yet urgent. “Mr. Quinnell, your health can’t wait any longer. You need to be admitted to the hospital immediately.”
“If you don’t want to go back to Kingbourne, we can stay in Southdale for now. Mr. Lloyd is monitoring the Harmony Community, and word about Ms. Quinnell will reach us soon.”
Fabian had initially protested, but as his fever began to rise, the decision was made. Without another word, the Quinnell family driver turned the car around, heading away from the Harmony Community and towards the hospital.
At that very moment, a girl riding a bicycle happened to pass by the Quinnell family’s SUV. It was Wynter, returning to the community.
“Susan, you’re finally back!” The voice came from Susan Perry, the fruit vendor who worked at the entrance of the community. She hurried over to Wynter, a wide grin on her face.
“Did Domie tell you? A group of suspicious people came looking for you,” Susan said, her tone light and casual.
Outside the hotel earlier, Dom had been addressed as “Mr. Fisher,” but to Susan, he was just another resident of the community. She treated him no differently than anyone else, which was exactly how Wynter liked it.
Wynter didn’t mind in the slightest. She casually raised her hand to check Susan’s pulse, a quick gesture she had become accustomed to. After a moment, she smiled and remarked, “So, Mr. Fisher came all the way here on his scooter, huh?”
“He’s still got it,” Susan teased, clearly proud of Dom’s willingness to help.
Dom, feeling touched by the praise, looked at Wynter with a grateful smile. “Susan’s right. It’s just what I should do. Feel free to reach out if you ever need anything, Dr. Genius.”
Wynter accepted his kindness with grace. “Thank you, Mr. Fisher. I appreciate it.”
It was a moment of mutual respect between neighbors—one that strengthened their relationship. If Wynter had been standoffish or aloof, Dom might have only helped because of Susan. But Wynter was warm and generous, always reciprocating kindness with kindness.
From the very beginning, Dom had seen great potential in Wynter, and the more he interacted with her, the more he admired her. How many young people had such brilliance, yet were humble enough to treat others with respect?
Thinking back to the man from Caesar Hotel earlier—Ewan—Dom felt a sense of quiet satisfaction. The Yates family had truly underestimated Wynter, failing to recognize her worth. How foolish they were.
Back at Caesar Hotel, Ewan sneezed violently as he answered a phone call. His face twisted in irritation as he listened.
“What? People from Havenlight County are here?” he repeated, his brows knitting in confusion. “Why are they here? I’m telling you, we have nothing to do with them anymore. Just handle it!”
Unaware of the unfolding events, Ewan’s frustration only grew. If he had known the Quinnell family was already on their way to find Wynter, his plans would have taken a drastic turn.
