Chapter 16: The Gibson Family Regrets Endangering Lives
If not the Gibson family, which family would be chosen to provide medical assistance in Southdale? That was the question on many minds after the shocking announcement that reverberated through the medical community.
As the news spread, private messages began to flood Wynter’s phone. Among the many families eager to align with her, Abel stood out. His message read, “Boss, you’re wise. You should’ve partnered with someone else long ago. It’s finally our turn, the Lopez family, to bask in wealth and glory!”
But Wynter didn’t respond. After issuing the ousting order against the Gibson family, she turned off her phone and continued with her free medical consultations. There, on the roadside square, no one could have guessed that the young girl, casually helping the community, wielded so much influence over the affairs of Southdale.
At the same time, in a private room at Caesar Hotel, a ceremonial apprenticeship was unfolding. Hilda, whom Gavin had mentioned earlier, was holding an apprentice ceremony with Yvette at her side. The Yates family, ever eager to please, tried to impress Hilda.
At the dinner table, Wanda, in her efforts to win favor, urged, “Yve, quickly offer Madam Gibson some tea.”
Yvette, showing respect to the older woman, curtsied and presented the tea, saying, “Madam Gibson, here’s your tea.”
Hilda smiled, clearly pleased. “You are my apprentice now. We’ll visit whichever hospital we want, and I’ll introduce you around.”
Wanda and Ewan’s faces lit up with joy at Hilda’s words, already imagining the power and prestige they would soon hold.
Just as everyone was about to raise their glasses in celebration, the door suddenly burst open. A person stumbled into the room, visibly panicked.
“Madam Gibson, we’ve got bad news!” the person gasped.
Hilda’s smile faded instantly. “Just say it,” she ordered, her voice sharp.
The messenger handed over their phone, struggling to speak. “The Heavenly Medical Guild has ousted the Gibson family.”
“What?” Hilda’s face turned pale in an instant. In her shock, she lost her grip on the tea, which spilled onto Yvette’s skin, causing her to cry out in pain.
Yvette flinched, but Hilda seemed not to notice. Instead, she snatched the phone from the messenger’s hand. As she read the ousting order, her face drained of color. The words on the screen hit her like a physical blow.
“Madam Gibson?” Yvette called softly, unsure of what to do.
But Hilda didn’t answer. She felt lightheaded, overwhelmed by the sudden blow to her family’s legacy. Her vision blurred as she staggered back into her chair, unable to stand.
“Impossible. How is this possible?” she muttered under her breath, struggling to comprehend what had just happened. “Why would this happen?” The words were barely audible as she clutched the phone tightly, her fingers trembling.
“Who did this?” she demanded, her voice rising as panic set in. Her elegant composure was shattered. “Who offended the Heavenly Medical Guild?”
The medical students in the room looked at one another in confusion. “Madam Gibson, we don’t know what the Heavenly Medical Guild is. What’s happening?” one of them asked.
In her frantic state, Hilda failed to realize that only those with significant medical knowledge would understand the true power of the Heavenly Medical Guild. The guild had provided assistance to major hospitals and the most prestigious families for years. The Gibson family had been able to maintain dominance over the other medical families in Southdale largely because of the guild’s support.
Now, that very guild had turned its back on them.
Hilda, lost in her thoughts, could barely process the enormity of the situation. How had it all gone wrong? What had the Gibson family done to deserve this punishment? They had always been careful, targeting only the vulnerable—those without powerful connections. They had never overstepped in ways that could attract the attention of someone like the Heavenly Medical Guild.
As Hilda’s mind raced, she couldn’t help but feel a creeping sense of dread. How had the guild found out about their actions? Had someone tipped them off? Or was there something else at play, something she hadn’t considered?
Wanda, seeing Hilda’s distress, rushed forward to offer comfort. “Madam Gibson, it’s just a minor faction. Everyone knows the Gibson family’s reputation in Southdale. Don’t worry.”
Hilda, in a fit of frustration, nearly shouted, “A minor faction? You don’t know anything! Do you even know where the Heavenly Medical Guild is located? It’s in Kingbourne!”
She continued, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and anger. “The Heavenly Medical Guild, established 100 years ago, has treated countless people during the chaos of the 1911 AD revolution. This isn’t some small-time operation. This guild is a giant in the medical world. Without their support, the Gibson family’s power will crumble.”
Her words fell into the stunned silence of the room, and the reality of their situation began to sink in.
The Gibson family had become too arrogant, too dismissive of those they deemed beneath them. And now, the reckoning had come.
