Chapter 65: Theo Appears
“Grandpa.” Lydia’s voice cut through the tension, and she stepped forward, signaling the bodyguards in black to form a row on either side of Theo.
Theo, leaning heavily on his cane, seemed the picture of frailty as he slowly removed a bandage wrapped around his head. His gaze shifted toward Wynter, lingering for a moment, and then he faced the room full of onlookers.
For many generations, the Yarwoods had been a formidable family, and Theo’s presence commanded immediate respect. As his eyes swept over the crowd, an invisible weight fell over everyone. The air grew thick with anticipation.
“I heard the discussion earlier,” Theo began, his voice firm and clear. He paused, letting the tension build. “Empathy Clinic is definitely number one.”
His words rang out like a decree, and immediately, no one dared to argue.
Nelson, who had only wanted to interrogate Wynter about her medical ideas, suddenly lost all his energy. His shoulders slumped, and he became oddly listless.
Hilda forced a smile, though it was stiff and tight. “We didn’t know that it was you…” she said, though her words barely held the usual arrogance she had carried until that point.
“Apart from these three kids, none of you guessed that it was me,” Theo replied casually, his voice laced with indifference as he leaned back on his cane.
The embarrassment hit Hilda first. The others weren’t faring any better—every one of them was now desperately wishing they could disappear into the floor.
Who would have thought that the third patient had been Theo himself, pretending to be ill? This was beyond the scope of any of their medical expertise.
Hilda’s mind raced. No! I can’t let this girl steal the spotlight!
Suddenly, Yvette whispered to her, “Madam Gibson, you have a rare medicine that can cure all diseases.”
Hilda’s eyes lit up as Yvette’s reminder hit her. She had almost forgotten about her trump card.
“Mr. Yarwood Senior!” Hilda exclaimed loudly, seizing the moment. “I heard that Mr. Yarwood has been ill! I’ve brought the medicine you’ve been looking for!”
The room buzzed with excitement. Theo’s gaze shifted to Hilda, and he motioned to his bodyguard to take the item from her.
With a flourish, Hilda opened a wooden box and presented it before Theo, her voice dripping with significance. “It’s the Zenith herb!”
A murmur of recognition swept through the crowd, and even Howard’s eyes sharpened with interest.
“The Gibsons found the Zenith herb?” someone whispered, astonished.
The Zenith herb was legendary. It had last been seen a decade ago, and it was rumored to have miraculous properties. Cultivated by the founder of the Heavenly Medical Guild, it was said to detoxify and cure all diseases. Its fame had spread far and wide, with stories of a wealthy figure in Kingbourne being cured of cancer after receiving a dose of the herb.
Now, the Heavenly Medical Guild only had three remaining Zenith herbs, and they were used sparingly to maintain the stability of the guild. It was said that the Gibsons had pulled off a remarkable feat in obtaining one.
Theo, despite his calm exterior, felt a flicker of excitement. The Yarwoods had been in touch with the Heavenly Medical Guild for years in an effort to acquire a Zenith herb. But the Guild had been unwilling to part with it without an exorbitant price tag, and while the Yarwoods had the money, time was running out. Only a select few knew just how dire Theo’s grandson’s situation was.
Theo’s expression remained unreadable as he stared at the wooden box. After a long pause, he spoke. “Dr. Gibson, you’re worthy of your renown as a doctor. Tell me your conditions.”
At his words, a wave of envy rippled through the room. Hilda, enjoying the attention, pretended to be gracious as she responded, “I would like to become Mr. Yarwood’s attending physician.”
Theo, deep in thought, stroked the dragon cane in his hand. His grandson already had a designated physician, Dr. Genius, who had been taking care of him for some time. Only Dr. Genius was trusted by the Yarwoods to treat him, but now, the Gibsons had the Zenith herb.
While Theo pondered, Wynter suddenly sneered. “Madam Gibson, do you need a reminder of where your Zenith herb came from?”
The words hung in the air like a challenge. Hilda’s smile faltered, her carefully constructed poise cracking under Wynter’s calm gaze.
She quickly recovered, patting Yvette’s hand as she tried to brush off the uncomfortable truth. “Yve, as I expected. Your sister is indeed jealous of us.”
But the damage had been done. Everyone in the room now knew that there was more to the Zenith herb than met the eye, and the tension between Hilda and Wynter had reached a new boiling point.
Theo looked on, still leaning on his cane, his eyes glinting with amusement. The game had only just begun.
