Chapter 34: You Won’t Die if You Don’t Do It
Children didn’t grasp the complexities of right and wrong. Wolf, with his fierce appearance and rough demeanor, had never been taught those concepts. Abandoned by his parents at a young age, he had grown up without understanding the boundaries of morality. Rather than being “taken in” by Margaret, it was more accurate to say he had stayed at the clinic after Wynter defeated him in a way that left him with no other place to go.
Though his outward appearance had softened over the past three years, thanks to the calming influence of the herbal medicine Margaret had introduced him to, his inherent ruthlessness remained. Anyone who found themselves in his crosshairs wouldn’t escape unscathed.
Wynter sat in the courtyard, absently playing with a locust flower. Her demeanor was relaxed, but there was a cold calculation in her eyes, as though she were savoring the anticipation of what was to come.
Inside the Gibson manor, it was late at night. Hilda still lay in bed, recovering from the shock. Her medical apprentices gathered downstairs, all vying for her favor, eager to show their loyalty. Among them, Maverick Watson and Luke stood out, their faces the most familiar and influential in the group. Yvette, however, was not present; Hilda had called both her and Wanda upstairs as soon as she woke up.
When Yvette entered the room, her face turned pale, her eyes red from distress. She rushed to Hilda’s side, more upset than when she had seen her own grandmother ill.
“Madam Gibson, what happened to you? Who angered you?” Yvette asked, her voice filled with concern.
Hilda, with a cooling patch on her forehead, was about to curse but caught herself before she spoke. Her words came out more controlled, but still dripping with venom. “It’s your fault,” she muttered, then paused and let out a deep breath. “Well, I got tricked by that young lady.”
Yvette’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Young lady?”
Hilda’s voice grew cold as she spat out the name. “That poor relative of yours, the country bumpkin.” The mere thought of Wynter made her blood boil. “She had the nerve to play tricks in our hospital!”
Yvette’s shock was palpable. “She?”
At the same time, Wanda, standing nearby, clenched her fists. “That annoying brat!” she hissed. “Why won’t she just go back to the countryside and look for her biological parents? She promised she wouldn’t follow us around anymore, but now she’s everywhere we go. She talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. All she wants is more money!”
“Madam Gibson, rest assured, I’ll take care of her,” Wanda assured, trying to sound confident, but there was a hint of frustration in her voice.
Hilda feigned a calm, generous smile. “I won’t stoop to the level of a country bumpkin. But there is one thing I want to ask you, Wanda.”
Wanda, somewhat confused, tilted her head. “What is it?”
Hilda’s eyes narrowed as she questioned her. “Why did you never tell me this poor relative of yours has medical skills?”
Wanda burst into laughter. “Medical skills? Her? She’s just a college student. How could she possibly have medical skills?”
Hilda sighed deeply, her voice taking on an ominous tone. “That’s not true. Some people can be very good at hiding their true abilities. She managed to fool Mr. Lopez with her acupuncture skills. It’s ridiculous, really.”
“Mr. Lopez?” Yvette’s expression shifted, a flicker of concern in her eyes. “What did he say?”
Wanda quickly dismissed the concern with a wave. “I know that brat. Her grades in school are awful. She never takes her studies seriously. She’s just learned a few tricks from that old woman, Margaret, to fool people.”
Hilda’s eyes suddenly sharpened. “Did she learn from Margaret?” she asked, sitting up straighter. “You said she’s a distant relative. Why is she involved with Margaret?”
Margaret may have come from a small, newly rising family, but she had a certain influence—one that Hilda couldn’t ignore. If Wynter had learned from her, that could be dangerous. Margaret could be a far more formidable adversary than Hilda had anticipated.
Wanda, sensing the shift in the conversation, hurriedly tried to change the subject. “Madam Gibson, don’t waste your time on those people. Look what I brought you.” She opened a gift box, revealing the contents.
Hilda’s face lit up when she saw what was inside. “Zenith herb!” she exclaimed, her spirits lifting immediately. “Wonderful!” She stood up, her previous frustration momentarily forgotten as she reveled in her acquisition.
Wanda, with a sly smile, stepped forward. “And this, Madam Gibson, is that poor old lady’s most precious book.”
Hilda’s excitement faltered for just a second as she looked at the book, her thoughts immediately going to the acupuncture techniques she had heard about. “Acupuncture?” she murmured, then her eyes widened as realization struck. “So, that’s why Wynter’s technique is so special. It was Margaret who taught her!”
Her expression darkened as she thought about the implications. If Margaret’s teachings had given Wynter such an advantage, the stakes were higher than ever. The battle lines were drawn, and Hilda was ready to go to any lengths to secure her victory.
