Chapter 20: Do You Know How To Treat? Are You Capable?
“Who are you?” Alec turned sharply, his eyes landing on the voice that had cut through the tension in the room.
A young woman stood there, her dark hair framing a face that was calm yet assertive, a piece of gum absentmindedly being chewed as her sharp eyes scanned the room.
Ryan quickly interjected, “Alec, this is the genius doctor I brought…”
But before Ryan could finish, a cold, cutting voice interrupted him.
“Ridiculous!”
It was Hilda, who had arrived late, her eyes narrowing at Wynter. She clearly wasn’t pleased. “You greedy little girl again,” she sneered. “Are you here to scam the hospital because you can’t make any money?”
Hilda’s gaze flickered over Wynter with distaste, before she snapped, “Who brought this person in? Didn’t anyone bother to check?”
Sergio, who had been standing quietly off to the side, rushed over at the mention of Hilda’s name. “Dr. Gibson, it’s a misunderstanding. These people are all the patient’s companions. His condition is critical, and he needs immediate attention.”
“The patient’s companions?” Hilda’s expression was one of incredulity. Her eyes shifted toward Wynter, her voice dripping with disdain. “So, is this girl related to the patient? Or is she just some poor relative pretending to be from Kingbourne, making you all run here for nothing?”
“Clear the room first,” Hilda demanded, her voice carrying the authority of someone who expected no opposition.
Ryan’s face tightened, and he shook his head firmly. “No, we must stay.”
Hilda’s voice turned icy. “I prefer to consult patients in private. If you can’t accept that, then you can forget about consulting me at all.”
Her tone left no room for negotiation. She was unwilling to treat anyone if they didn’t follow her rules, and clearly, she wasn’t thrilled about the overtime.
Ryan, now visibly irritated, clenched his fists. “You’re a doctor! How can you leave a patient unattended?” he growled, his frustration building.
Hilda shrugged dismissively. “Why are you talking like that? As if you’re a family member? I suggested clearing the room, but you disagreed. What can I do? If you want me to treat the patient, I can.”
She turned her attention to Wynter, her gaze full of condescension. “Your girl here doesn’t know how to behave and has offended me. I’ll let her off the hook. If she apologizes to me in person, then I’ll see the patient.”
“She won’t apologize to you!” Ryan’s voice cracked with anger. He had spent years in Kingbourne and never encountered anyone as insufferable as Hilda. Now, it was clear that she wasn’t interested in saving lives—she was more interested in asserting her power.
Hilda scoffed, her eyes flashing with mockery. “What’s your problem? Are you trying to cause trouble here?”
Ryan, furious, took a step forward, his temper flaring. For a moment, he thought about physically confronting her.
But before he could act, Wynter raised her hand, stopping him. Her voice was steady and calm, cutting through the rising tension. “Stay calm. Saving lives is the priority. We can deal with the rest later.”
Ryan’s eyes were burning with anger, but he held himself back, nodding reluctantly. “I’ll listen to you! Please! You must save him. I beg you!”
Alec, watching the scene unfold, couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration for Wynter’s composure. It was clear that she had a quiet confidence that made him believe she was capable of handling this.
Hilda, however, couldn’t hide her disdain. “You really think an amateur like her can cure and save lives? My goodness, that’s just ignorance.”
Sergio, who had remained silent until now, hesitated before speaking. “Mr. Hunter, what Dr. Gibson says is right. You can’t let your emotions get the best of you. This is a very complex case. Neither you nor I can do much. Do you think she can handle it?”
Wynter, her gaze never leaving the patient, responded calmly, her voice as cool as ever. “The patient initially had ragged breathing, an unexplained high fever, followed by a persistent dry cough with blood in the throat and tightness in the chest. Given these symptoms, he should already be losing consciousness.”
Sergio’s eyes widened in shock, his disbelief written across his face. Every single symptom Wynter listed matched the patient’s condition precisely.
