Chapter 27: You Won’t Live for Long
A wave of heat washed over Dalton.
He couldn’t help but swallow, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. In the dim light, he appeared unusually… attractive, with this subtle gesture. It was a rare sight.
Everyone in Sorzada City knew that Dalton was abstinent and a strict vegetarian. No one had ever managed to break through his otherworldly composure. But right now, his collar was open, his usually neat hair messy.
Ryan’s heart sank as he watched.
The genius doctor had truly crossed a line.
Ryan had worked under Fabian for years, and he knew well the history between the Quinnell and Yarwood families. Dalton had been a frequent visitor to the Quinnell Corporation to discuss the engagement break-off. But in all these years, Ryan had never seen Dalton like this—never had he seen Dalton look so… menacing.
Dalton, always so high and mighty, aloof and untouchable, seemed utterly unshaken by the world. Nothing or no one could ever move him. But now, the audacity of the genius doctor unbuttoning his shirt had pushed him past his usual calm.
Ryan buried his face in his hands, a sense of dread washing over him. What had she done?
Wynter, on the other hand, seemed completely unaware of the storm she’d just stirred. After her demonstration, she was preparing to pack up and leave.
The doctors, reluctant to let her go, looked at each other, unsure of how to keep her around.
Victor, eager to convince her, blurted out, “Dr. Genius, would you be interested in working at our hospital? We can negotiate the salary.”
Wynter, tying up her long hair, refused without a second thought. “No, I don’t like waking up early.”
“You could work in the afternoon!” Victor was so desperate that he seemed to forget about Dalton entirely.
Wynter remained unmoved. “Medicine’s just a hobby for me. And… Mr. Lopez, have you forgotten?”
Victor frowned. “Forgotten what?”
“I’m a college student,” she said nonchalantly, grabbing her black bag. “Isn’t that school yours?”
Victor froze for a moment.
Yes, he did run that school—the one that was perpetually in the red, struggling with poor management and a lackluster student body. But he still kept it running, hoping to give underprivileged students a chance at an education.
Did the genius doctor just claim to be a student of his school?
Victor blinked, completely stunned. “How can you be a college student?”
“I’ll be sitting for the university entrance examination this year,” Wynter said, her voice calm and matter-of-fact.
Victor’s fists clenched. This was the real point, wasn’t it? A college student with an attending physician certificate and incredible medical skills? How was that even possible?
He took a deep breath, trying to regain his composure. “Won’t you consider joining us? I can give you full credits.”
Wynter smiled playfully, a glint of mischief in her eyes. “You may not know me well, Mr. Lopez. I’m usually late, leave early, and I don’t care about credits.”
Victor was left speechless.
Dalton, who had been silently watching the exchange, now allowed a faint smile to play at the corners of his lips. It wasn’t cold or calculating, but warm and undeniably captivating.
Wynter turned to him, a confused look on her face. “What’s so funny?”
Dalton left his collar open, his body slightly bent forward. His conspicuous collarbone was visible, and there seemed to be a tattoo of sorts on it—though it was hard to make out in the low light. The bright red of the design contrasted sharply against his pale skin.
“You almost gave Mr. Lopez a heart attack,” Dalton said, his voice carrying a touch of joy, sounding almost amused.
Wynter placed her hand gently on his wrist, her gaze intense. For a moment, Dalton could feel how serious she was.
“You…” she began, her voice steady, “you don’t have many years left. Do you know that?”
