Chapter 30: That Person’s Identity Is Not Simple
“That person?” Wynter caught the subtle tone in his voice. “Isn’t he the son of the Quinnell family?”
Ryan hesitated, clearly not wanting to reveal too much. “Well… sort of. He’s a distant relative, but not directly from the Quinnell line.”
Wynter lowered her gaze and popped a piece of candy into her mouth, her smile barely noticeable. “I thought you might insist that the man inside wasn’t Mr. Quinnell.”
“I consider you one of us,” Ryan replied earnestly. “And you’re a good person. I have no worries. My boss is indeed part of Kingbourne’s wealthiest family—the Quinnell family.”
Wynter pressed the candy against the roof of her mouth as she hummed a noncommittal reply. Ryan chuckled at her calmness.
“Just as I expected from you, Dr. Genius,” he teased. “Nothing surprises you. I was overthinking this. Apologies.”
“You did the right thing. Employees should protect their boss’s privacy,” Wynter responded, her voice smooth.
They reached the alleyway, just a short distance from her destination. “You can stop here. I’ll be on time tomorrow,” she added.
Ryan hesitated, clearly wanting to say more. “Aren’t you curious why the Quinnell family is here in Southdale?”
Wynter let out a soft laugh. “This is not something a doctor should ask about.”
Ryan was even more impressed by her, not only for her medical expertise but also for her straightforward and principled character.
“If you ever go to Kingbourne, I’ll look after you,” he said, his words direct and sincere. “Consider us friends.”
Wynter had planned to return to Kingbourne sooner or later anyway, given that the Heavenly Medical Guild had roots there. She didn’t mind Ryan’s enthusiasm; she preferred working with people who were genuine and pragmatic, not sycophantic or hesitant.
“Alright, then. I’ll call you Ryan,” she said with a genuine smile.
Ryan’s face lit up. “And I’ll call you Wynter!”
The moment Ryan spoke, he instantly regretted it. After all, Wynter had treated Fabian—she was practically a savior to the Quinnell family. Why would someone like her become friends with him?
But then, he realized Wynter wasn’t like other snobbish socialites from Kingbourne. From her act of treating an elderly man by the roadside, it was clear she had a strong sense of justice. That was the kind of person he wanted to protect.
“Wynter, there’s something I need to tell you, as a friend,” Ryan said seriously. “That man’s background is not simple. If you cure him, you’ll rise to the top. But if you can’t, things could get tricky. Don’t worry though—I’ll have your back.”
Wynter smiled at his concern. “Ryan, don’t worry. There’s no disease I can’t cure… so far.”
Ryan blinked in disbelief. “You can really cure him?”
“Of course.” Wynter’s confidence was unwavering. “It just takes some time. By the way, have you ever heard a certain rumor?”
Ryan’s curiosity was piqued. “What rumor?”
“That a miracle doctor can delay the Grim Reaper.” Wynter smiled, but didn’t elaborate further, letting the mystery hang in the air.
Ryan muttered to himself, “What you’re saying sounds more like tarot than medicine.”
Wynter’s smile widened, her beauty only enhancing the moment. “Maybe I really do read tarot.”
