Chapter 76: Mr. Yarwood Invites Her
Wanda’s temper flared as she snapped, “I’ve told you not to mention her!”
Her voice grew louder, unable to hold back her frustration with Wynter, who she considered nothing more than a fake daughter. “Yve, you’re still young, so you don’t understand. Once she becomes poor, she’ll find ways to cling to you. You said that she’s changed? That’s because she’s trying to make a living!”
Yvette frowned, shaking her head. “But she does know medicine. Even Mr. Yarwood Senior was here just now.”
A moment of realization hit Yvette as she stared at her mother, shocked. “You mean the Yarwoods chose her?”
Wanda’s lips curled into a bitter sneer. “Ah, so now she’s clinging to the Lopezes! I underestimated that poor old lady. She’s finally learned to use her connections!”
Yvette, still processing, bit her lip, hesitant. “But Grandma’s medical skills are good, right?”
Wanda scoffed, dismissing the idea. “She may have some skills, but she also caused a patient’s death. Her reputation in the medical world is tarnished. Only the Lopezes are still on her side.”
Yvette’s thoughts turned inward, her mind racing.
Wanda noticed the silence and reached out, taking her daughter’s hand. “Yve,” she said, her tone softening. “Don’t worry. Even if the Lopezes help Margaret, they won’t be able to do much. What’s important now is that we find a way to get close to the Yarwoods.”
Yvette lifted her head, her eyes shining with a sudden idea. “There is a way.”
Wanda leaned in, eager to hear. “What’s it?”
Yvette turned her gaze away, a smile tugging at her lips. “I deliberately left the Zenith herb at the Yarwoods. I’ll have an excuse to go into their manor again. Mom, do you think that’s a good plan?”
Wanda’s face lit up with satisfaction. “My babe! What’s wrong with that? You’re so smart!”
She looked at her daughter with pride, a sharp contrast to her thoughts about Wynter. “That fake girl can never compare to you! Her IQ isn’t even in the same league as yours!”
At the mention of Wynter, Yvette’s smile turned cold. She felt a flicker of cruelty, something she had no problem hiding from her mother. But Wanda didn’t notice. To her, the comparison only reinforced her belief that Yvette was the better choice for success.
Wanda’s mind, however, remained focused on the bigger picture. She didn’t care about Wynter’s skills or intelligence. She was fixated on her daughter’s future. Yvette had studied medicine at a university in Kingbourne, a place of prestige, while Wynter had only managed to get into college. It was a source of embarrassment for Wanda, something that had never sat right with her.
Unlike Yvette, who was poised to get close to the Yarwoods, Wynter had little chance of standing out. Wanda was certain that soon, Yvette would be the one to marry into that prestigious family and claim her rightful place.
But just as Wanda began to dream of the wealth and status that would come with her daughter’s success, Yvette interrupted her thoughts with a sudden question. “Mom, who did the Gibsons offend to cause their downfall so badly? Could it be related to Grandma’s Zenith herb?”
Wanda, seething with hatred for Hilda, answered bitterly. “The Gibsons have been accumulating enemies for years! Don’t keep linking that old lady to everything. With her way of taking bribes, one of her apprentices might have reported her!”
Yvette nodded, the wheels in her mind turning. Since the Special Operations Team had arrived, there had to be an informer. She suspected it might be the trainee doctor in the video.
But Yvette had a different plan. She needed to use the Zenith herb to turn the Yarwoods’ opinion of her in her favor. A meeting with Mr. Yarwood could be just the opportunity she needed.
She was certain the Yarwoods still underestimated Wynter, thinking her medical knowledge wasn’t enough to matter. But that arrogance would be their downfall.
Meanwhile, Wynter, who had been preparing to leave the manor with Abel and Xavier, was suddenly stopped by a bodyguard in black.
The bodyguard was polite, but his words took her by surprise. “Hello, Ms. Yates. Mr. Yarwood is looking for you.”
Wynter stood still, stunned by the sudden invitation. Mr. Yarwood, the man she had never imagined would seek her out directly, had requested her presence. She could hardly believe it.
