Chapter 89: Is He Angry?
Wynter’s voice was light, almost casual as she spoke, but the weight of her words lingered in the air. “Yes, I went to treat him before, but their security blocked me. Their special assistant even looked down on me.”
She only mentioned those two men, not going into further detail. “They said I was just a poor student and warned me not to overestimate myself. I still hold a grudge about it.”
Dalton didn’t respond right away, but his thoughts were clear. Wynter had clearly already figured out who Vincent was, though she had never said it outright.
The Jenkins family had close ties with the Scotts, so Vincent must have encountered her at a cocktail party, where he probably looked down on her while she was in the middle of her rescue work. As for the person sitting in the limited edition Maybeck that night, Wynter could guess who it was.
The one who made Vincent, so arrogant and self-assured, show respect… That could only be Mr. Yarwood, the infamous tycoon of the business world.
Wynter didn’t mention the recent events surrounding Mr. Yarwood’s investigation of her or the Special Operations Team’s involvement. Her current identity as a “fake daughter” was the perfect cover, after all.
Ethan, who had been listening intently, looked at Dalton with growing concern. He had never heard of such a thing. Who would dare look down on Dr. Genius? Wouldn’t they fear being sent to Astana?
Dalton flicked the red beaded bracelet on his wrist absentmindedly, his gaze hardening. There was a cold edge to his eyes.
Ethan, used to his composure, felt a chill run down his spine. Was Dalton angry?
But then, it wasn’t really anger. It was more a sense of disbelief that Wynter had been treated this way.
“Even the security blocked you?” he asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.
“More than that. He even drove me away,” Wynter said nonchalantly, though the real reason she had turned down treating Mr. Yarwood was much more complex.
She had always been able to sense potential danger before it arrived, and she took precautions. Wolf was an especially unique case, and having the Special Operations Team target him wouldn’t be ideal. As for Mr. Yarwood… He was good at finding clues and even managed to make her waste a set of equipment in the mountains, just to escape his tracking. Naturally, she wasn’t about to take the Yarwoods’ offer lightly.
“It seems the Yarwoods need some internal restructuring,” Dalton said coldly, straightening the red beads on his wrist as he glanced at Ethan, his eyes narrowing with a shadow of displeasure.
Ethan felt the sweat start to trickle down his back. He wasn’t sure what to say. A slight shift in Dalton’s mood, and everything felt heavier.
Wynter, sensing the tension, let out a soft chuckle and rested her chin in her hand, her voice playful as she added, “Actually, it’s not really about the Yarwoods’ internal organization. The real reason is that I don’t like Mr. Yarwood. I’ve heard that a lot of women want to marry him, and if I went to treat him, what would I do if he thought I was interested in him?”
The words were meant to dismiss any notion that she might be inclined to help the Yarwoods, but they didn’t seem to have the desired effect. Instead, Dalton raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a small smile. “Have you ever met Mr. Yarwood? Why do you say that?”
“I’ve never met him,” Wynter replied, her tone light, almost teasing. “But I’ve heard plenty of rumors. I’m sure everyone in your circle knows about him. Doesn’t he avoid getting close to anyone? Just like the plots in novels, he’s supposedly not interested in women.”
Dalton took a sip of his tea, his expression thoughtful. “I think not being interested in women could be an advantage.”
“Originally, I thought the same,” Wynter leaned in closer, adopting a conspiratorial tone. “That is, until I heard about the rumors with an actor. He even set up an entertainment company to support this actor. Now that’s real love, don’t you think?”
Ethan nearly dropped his jaw. “You think Mr. Yarwood likes men?”
His mind was spinning. Dr. Genius, please stop talking! Can’t you see who you’re talking about?
Wynter shrugged casually, completely unaware of Ethan’s growing panic. “Well, you know how rumors are. Who knows?”
Dalton remained unusually calm, though there was a slight twitch of his lips. He didn’t give away much, but his eyes had a glint that suggested he wasn’t as unaffected as he appeared.
