Chapter 14 The Last Day
Nathaniel’s mind was spinning as he processed Cecilia’s words. Each one struck him like a lightning bolt, igniting feelings he had long buried. The regret in her voice, the pain that had lingered for so many years, was something he had never fully understood. It hit him now, with a force he couldn’t ignore. The weight of her words made him realize just how deep the wounds had gone—and how much he had failed her.
His thoughts clouded with a rush of guilt, but as he heard her voice weaken, something inside him snapped. He couldn’t let this happen. Not now. Not like this. He couldn’t let her slip away without at least trying to make things right, without telling her that there was still time for them to fix things.
“Where are you, Cecilia?” Nathaniel’s voice cracked with urgency. The words were out before he even realized how desperate he sounded.
But Cecilia’s response was faint, almost drowned out by the wind and rain. She didn’t seem to hear him, or maybe she didn’t want to. Her thoughts were scattered, her mind slipping in and out of focus. She had reached a breaking point, feeling so lost and alone. The storm around her seemed to mirror the storm inside, the cold wind biting at her skin, the rain falling relentlessly, as though the world itself was pushing her to the edge.
“Please… just don’t,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the static of the phone. Her words trembled, as if they were her final plea.
Nathaniel’s heart tightened in his chest. He couldn’t let this happen. Not like this. Not after everything they had been through. He couldn’t believe that she had reached this point, that she had felt so abandoned and misunderstood all this time. But as her words continued to falter, something in him snapped. He couldn’t just let her go. Not like this.
“I’m coming to you, Cecilia. Don’t do anything rash. Just hold on,” he said, his voice now thick with desperation.
The words were out before he could stop them, driven by a fear he hadn’t known he carried. He didn’t even care about the mess of his own feelings anymore. All he knew was that he couldn’t lose her. Not now. Not when he still had a chance to make things right.
The distance between them seemed insurmountable. She was so far away, both physically and emotionally, and yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had to reach her. He didn’t know if it was too late. He didn’t know if she would listen to him or if the damage was beyond repair. But he had to try. He had to make sure she knew the truth.
In the cold cemetery, Cecilia’s hands shook as she gripped the phone, the trembling in her body a reflection of her inner turmoil. The pills were still in her bag, the weight of them heavy, but for the first time in days, a flicker of hope stirred within her. Maybe, just maybe, there was still a chance. A chance to undo the pain, a chance to find something better than the darkness that had consumed her.
Nathaniel’s voice, though distant, seemed to anchor her for just a moment. His words broke through the fog in her mind, pulling her back from the edge. She wasn’t sure if it was too little, too late, but as she sat there in the rain, her heart still heavy with the weight of her past, she allowed herself to believe for just a second that maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t completely alone after all.
And maybe, just maybe, there was still a future waiting for her.
