Chapter 70 I Know You Were Pregnantnoveldrama
Cecilia assumed Nathaniel had brought her here intentionally, perhaps to force her to admit that she hadn’t lost her memory. She braced herself for an interrogation, expecting him to confront her about the past.
But Nathaniel did not pursue that angle. Instead, his grip tightened on the steering wheel, his expression unreadable.
“How’s the child doing, Cecilia?” he asked, his voice low but with an edge of something Cecilia couldn’t place.
Cecilia froze, her heart skipping a beat. The child—he still remembered. When Zachary had handed him her medical records, the note had confirmed that she had been pregnant for two weeks at some point in the past. Nathaniel had never asked before, perhaps waiting for Cecilia to tell him on her own. Now, it was clear that he knew.
The question felt like a heavy weight pressing on her chest.
“What child?” she asked, her voice betraying her anxiety as her pupils contracted.
Nathaniel’s car slowed and then came to a stop. He turned to face her, his eyes sharp and searching, as if he could pierce through her every thought.
“I know you were pregnant back then,” he said, his words cutting through the silence with unnerving clarity.
Cecilia’s pulse quickened. She feared, perhaps irrationally, that Nathaniel knew about Jonathan and Elliot. If he had uncovered their existence, he might take them from her.
She swallowed, trying to keep her composure. “All I remember is the doctor telling me that I had a miscarriage.”
Nathaniel’s face fell. The words he’d feared had been confirmed.
For a moment, he said nothing. His mind raced, filled with an eerie certainty that there had never been a child. If there had been, how could Cecilia have returned alone? He’d sent people to watch her, to monitor her every movement. Yet no child had ever been seen with her.
And the most glaring truth—how could someone so fragile, so clearly vulnerable, have carried a child?
His throat tightened. He remained silent, his gaze fixed forward, as if grappling with an internal conflict he was unwilling to voice.
The ride back was filled with an oppressive silence. Cecilia’s unease only deepened. As soon as she returned home, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She didn’t hesitate to dial Calvin’s number.
The call was answered almost immediately, Calvin’s voice coming through as smooth and reassuring as always. “What happened, Ceci?”
Cecilia’s heart raced. Calvin always knew when something was wrong. She took a deep breath before responding. “Today, Nathaniel sought me out. He asked about the child. He knows I was pregnant… before.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Calvin’s voice came back, calm but firm. “Don’t worry. I’ve had someone adjust Jon and Eli’s birthdates. They’re safe.”
A wave of relief washed over her. “That’s good, that’s good,” she murmured.
Her mind briefly faltered as she realized just how much she had been relying on Calvin for everything, and how much she feared the consequences of Nathaniel learning the truth.
“Don’t be afraid,” Calvin added, his tone firm but comforting. “As long as I’m here, no one will take Eli and Jonathan from you.”
Cecilia smiled faintly, reassured by his words. “Thank you, Calvin.”
Meanwhile, thousands of kilometers away, Calvin stood atop a skyscraper by the sea. The vast ocean stretched out before him, the waves crashing against the shore far below. Behind him, a group of executives waited in a large conference room, their eyes focused on the clock, waiting for him to wrap up the call.
But Calvin’s mind was elsewhere. After hanging up with Cecilia, he stood still for a moment, a slight frown on his face.
He turned to his assistant. “Keep a close watch on Eli. No one from Nathaniel’s side can find out about him, understand?”
His assistant nodded, but Calvin’s thoughts were still clouded. Recently, he had noticed unusual interest being taken in Cecilia’s past—too much interest for it to be coincidence.
He hadn’t expected Nathaniel’s influence to reach this far, especially not to track down someone like Cecilia.
But Calvin wasn’t going to let Nathaniel get close. Not now, not ever.
That night, Cecilia had a nightmare. In it, Nathaniel had discovered both children. His rejection was swift and brutal, but it was the chilling notion that he wanted them to disappear entirely that tormented her. The dream was so vivid, so real, that when she awoke, she was drenched in cold sweat, her heart pounding in her chest.
The memories from her marriage to Nathaniel flooded back. How Elena had constantly urged them to start a family, how Nathaniel had cruelly dismissed the idea, telling her coldly, “Even if I did touch you, and you got pregnant, I wouldn’t allow the child to be born.”
The harshness of those words echoed in her mind, a reminder of the cruelty she had endured. She stared into the dark room, unable to escape the weight of the past.
Sleep would not come again that night.
The next morning, Cecilia dressed with deliberate care, choosing an outfit that accentuated her figure and applied subtle makeup to hide the exhaustion lingering in her features. As she left the house, she tucked a few items into her bag, just in case she needed them.
At the CEO’s office of Orion Corporation, the day was only beginning.
