Chapter 41 A Talentless Primadonna
Stella’s expression was unreadable, a flicker of uncertainty passing through her as she processed the news. Since four years ago, Zachary had been acting like a completely different person, ignoring all her requests, leaving her feeling powerless. And Nathaniel? She wasn’t sure he would come to her aid. Still, there was one thing Stella knew for sure—there was nothing she desired that she couldn’t eventually get her hands on.
Turning to her agent, she issued a cold, commanding tone. “Find a way, no matter what, to get Cecelia’s composition in our possession.” She ended the call with a decisive snap, her mind already plotting her next move.
On the other end, Cecelia sat quietly after hanging up with Central Media. A faint but unmistakable coldness flashed across her calm demeanor. Over the years, she had learned everything about Stella’s game. Cecelia knew exactly what Stella was: someone who had no true talent of her own, using others’ work to maintain her status. Without Nathaniel’s and Zachary’s backing, Stella wouldn’t have lasted this long.
Cecelia’s bitterness towards Stella only grew as she thought back on the years when she had struggled with her hearing impairment while composing music. Music was a challenge for her, but she did it tirelessly, knowing that her family depended on her. She had worked hard, raising her children and supporting Martha, doing everything she could to ensure they had a good life. Now, the money she earned was enough to support her family—there was no way she would sell her composition for money, especially not to someone like Stella.
When she arrived home, Cecelia placed her phone down and headed to the bathroom for a soak, hoping the warm water would help ease her weary mind. But the exhaustion from her day hit her all at once, and before she knew it, she had fallen asleep in the bathtub.
The ringing of her phone woke her with a start. It was her best friend, Vivian.
“Ceci, I’ll be back in a couple of days,” Vivian said cheerfully on the other end of the line.
Cecelia emerged from the bathroom, wrapping herself in a loose bathrobe. “I’ll throw you a welcome party once you’re back.”
Vivian’s voice held genuine concern as she asked, “How have you been? Has Nathaniel been giving you trouble? And what about Stella? Does she know you’re back yet?”
Cecelia smiled softly as she walked toward the window, the warm summer evening lighting her face. “Stella still doesn’t know I’m back, but she’ll find out soon enough,” she replied. “As for Nathaniel, don’t worry. I won’t let him bully me.”
Just as Cecelia finished speaking, the doorbell rang, making her jump slightly. It was already nine at night—who could be visiting at this hour?
Without Sven by her side, Cecelia felt a brief flicker of unease. Sven had been with her nonstop lately, constantly on guard, but she had insisted he take a break.
Curious but cautious, Cecelia descended the stairs, glancing at the surveillance footage by the entrance. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw who it was.
Nathaniel stood outside her door, his tall figure casting a long shadow in the dim light. His expression was cold and impassive, and for a moment, Cecelia wondered why he was there.
She didn’t see any reason to avoid him, so she opened the door.
Cecelia, wearing only a loose white bathrobe and her hair falling messily around her shoulders, leaned casually against the doorframe. She met Nathaniel’s eyes, her voice light with a hint of mockery. “I was wondering who could be looking for me at such a late hour. Is there something you need, Mr. Rainsworth?”
Nathaniel’s gaze flickered over her attire, momentarily stunned by the transformation in Cecelia. She had changed so much, and something about her now made him want to understand everything that had happened during her absence.
His voice was low, though there was a certain edge to it. “I came to explain how we met… by chance.” His eyes narrowed, as if trying to see into Cecelia’s soul.
The intensity of his gaze made her heart race, a feeling she hadn’t experienced in a long time. She quickly forced herself to remain calm, despite the tension that filled the room. “Mr. Rainsworth, you don’t plan to stand out here all night, do you?”
Without warning, Nathaniel stepped forward, his body pressing against hers as he slammed the door shut behind him. The air around them grew heavy, and Cecelia could barely catch her breath.
Before she could even react, Nathaniel pulled her into his arms and kissed her deeply, silencing any words she might have had.
