Chapter 83: The Superstar On TV
Nathaniel’s voice, low and magnetic, carried a quiet intensity. Only he knew how much discomfort he had been concealing beneath his calm exterior. But despite the chemistry between them, he couldn’t let his guard down entirely. He needed to understand what Cecilia’s intentions were before he could act.
Cecilia froze, her eyes glimmering with unshed tears. “Don’t you want it?” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Nathaniel’s suspicions flared. He was certain she had some hidden agenda. To gain control of the situation, he quickly shifted the topic.
“Did you misunderstand something?” he asked, his tone calm, almost distant. “I was simply helping you recover your memory. That’s all for today. We have to attend the banquet now.”
Cecilia’s expression faltered, a pang of distress flashing in her eyes. Was our kiss—six or seven minutes long—nothing but a game to him?
She didn’t react overtly, but her hand subtly moved away from him, creating space between them.
Nathaniel, seemingly unaffected, moved toward the walk-in closet, preparing for the evening. He needed to regain composure before facing the crowd.
At the banquet, the atmosphere buzzed with the chatter of the elite. Guests mingled, laughter filled the air, and the clink of champagne glasses created a sophisticated backdrop. Zachary and George entered, making their grand entrance with all the aplomb of seasoned socialites.
George, always with an eye on his family’s legacy, was eager to take advantage of this event to find the perfect match for Zachary.
Zachary, on the other hand, was far less enthusiastic. After exchanging pleasantries with Niel, he was quickly whisked away by George, who insisted he speak to no fewer than twenty eligible young ladies.
“I’m telling you, if you don’t behave yourself today, you might as well leave the Sinclair family. I don’t need a useless grandson like you,” George chided harshly. “You’re still single—this is a disgrace to our family.”
Zachary felt the sting of his grandfather’s words, but remained silent. He had never lacked for attention from women, but he understood the weight of George’s demand.
“All right,” Zachary muttered, resigning himself to the evening. He wasn’t afraid of George; rather, he feared what his stress could do to his already fragile health. The doctor had warned him that anger and frustration could trigger his heart condition.
Just then, George’s eyes narrowed as he spotted Stella making her way toward them. She looked stunning, but there was no warmth in his gaze. Instead, it was filled with clear disdain.
He leaned in, his voice low but firm. “Remember, you can’t be with Stella.”
Zachary, his mind elsewhere, glanced at Stella with indifference. Ever since he learned that Cecilia had saved his life, his feelings for Stella had completely evaporated.
The only source of satisfaction for George now was that Zachary no longer harbored any affection for Stella.
Meanwhile, Felix and Jonathan were absorbed in the grandeur of the banquet, lost among the sea of guests. Jonathan’s bright eyes suddenly narrowed when he spotted Stella standing alone in the crowd.
Felix, noticing Jonathan’s gaze, followed it and explained, “That’s Stella Ross, rumored to be Uncle Nathaniel’s girlfriend.”
“Why is she alone?” Jonathan asked, his curiosity piqued. “Where’s your uncle?”
Felix frowned. Nathaniel was never late to such events. Something wasn’t right.
“I don’t know,” Felix admitted, then quickly added, “What will it take for you to believe that I’m the future head of the Rainsworth family? I had someone show you around the entire manor today.”
Jonathan gave a tired sigh, relenting. “I believe you now.”
Felix, despite the acknowledgment, felt no surge of satisfaction. Instead, there was a nagging sensation, as if Jonathan were treating him like a child.
“My stomach hurts. I need to use the bathroom. I’ll talk to you later,” Jonathan said, eager to break away.
Felix, eager to ensure Jonathan would come back, called after him. “Then remember to find me after you’re done.”
Jonathan didn’t respond, but as he was sure Felix had left the area, he slipped through the crowd, intent on finding Stella and confronting her about her betrayal of Cecilia.
Meanwhile, Stella scanned the room, looking for Nathaniel. She hadn’t spotted him yet, but as she was about to turn, a small figure suddenly darted toward her and threw their arms around her.
