Chapter 98 Exceptionally Exhausted
Cecilia glanced down at the evidence in front of her, the weight of it pressing down on her. She wasn’t sure how she felt about the growing support from Calvin and his quiet efforts behind the scenes. It was something she appreciated, but at the same time, it made her feel more indebted to him. She hadn’t asked for his help, yet here he was again, silently carrying her burdens, just as he had all those years ago.
She turned to Vivian, her expression hardening. “We need to use this, but carefully. Stella won’t go down without a fight.” Cecilia’s mind raced with the potential implications of this evidence. It wasn’t just about taking down a rival anymore. It was about proving that she wasn’t the helpless victim in this situation. She could fight back, and this time, she would.
Vivian nodded, her eyes filled with understanding. “I’ll prepare the necessary legal steps. We’ll need to make sure we have everything lined up. Stella will have powerful allies, but we can’t let her use that against you.”
Cecilia was silent for a moment, her thoughts flickering to the people she had to trust. Calvin had always been there for her—was it too much to ask for him to continue doing so, even after everything? After how she’d distanced herself from him?
She glanced back at the documents. The task ahead was clear, but the weight of her past was just as heavy. How had everything gotten so complicated? First, Nathaniel, then Stella… and now, Calvin’s involvement. She hadn’t expected to find herself so tangled in these old relationships again, yet here she was.
As she took a deep breath, her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. The screen lit up with a message from Nathaniel: “Are you going to keep ignoring me? You didn’t answer me this morning.”
A small knot formed in her stomach. She hadn’t anticipated that message, but it didn’t change anything. What could she say to him now? She had no answers for him—not after everything that had happened.
Vivian, noticing Cecilia’s brief hesitation, spoke softly, “You okay?”
Cecilia nodded, quickly wiping any traces of emotion from her face. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just… things to handle.” She turned her focus back to the paperwork, pushing Nathaniel and everything else aside, just for a moment.
But even as she tried to block it out, Nathaniel’s presence lingered at the back of her mind. The gentleness she had seen in his eyes earlier… the way he seemed so conflicted. It was maddening. Why couldn’t things be simpler between them? Why did they always have to be complicated, tangled in the past, in feelings, in misunderstandings?
She glanced at Vivian. “Let’s get this done. We’ll take down Stella and make sure she doesn’t get away with this.”
Vivian gave her a firm nod, her gaze filled with determination. “We will. You’ve got this, Cecilia.”
But as Cecilia began to focus on the task ahead, a lingering feeling gnawed at her. What would happen with Nathaniel?
