Chapter 24 Update On Her Condition
Ever since Zachary learned that Cecilia was pregnant, he had asked the hospital staff to keep him informed of her condition. But when he received the news that she had died, it hit Nathaniel like a lightning strike. “What’s the matter?” he asked, panic creeping into his voice.
“I don’t know all the details,” Zachary replied, his tone somber. “But when I went to the hospital today, the doctors said Cecilia had died.”
Nathaniel’s world seemed to tilt, and he stood up so abruptly that dizziness overwhelmed him. “Died? How is that possible? She was fine last night!”
He rushed toward the door, snatching his suit jacket and heading straight to the hospital. His mind replayed her parting words from the night before: “Mr. Rainsworth, if I died, would you be sad?”
For reasons he couldn’t explain, a sharp pain shot through his chest, and he struggled to breathe. He quickly unbuttoned his shirt, but the air still felt thick. The weight of her question haunted him as he drove, feeling as though the past was crashing down on him.
When he arrived at the hospital, Zachary was waiting outside.
“Where is she?” Nathaniel demanded, his voice tight.
“The nurse said someone took her away,” Zachary replied. “I checked the surveillance footage. It was Calvin.”
It was already past one in the morning, and Zachary handed Nathaniel the footage, looking exhausted.
“Last night, after midnight, Cecilia was brought in. She died from excessive blood loss…” Zachary continued, his words hanging in the air like a heavy burden.
Nathaniel’s mind raced. He recalled the moment he left her—just after midnight. What had happened during that time? Excessive blood loss? He couldn’t believe it.
Without hesitation, Nathaniel made a call, ordering an investigation into both Calvin’s and Cecilia’s whereabouts. It was going to be a long, sleepless night.
Zachary paced impatiently in front of Nathaniel. “How could someone so alive just suddenly die? What’s that deaf girl playing at now?”
Nathaniel’s patience was wearing thin. “Stop with the chatter. Look into the hospital records, and find out what happened.”
After Nathaniel left, the hospital compiled all of Cecilia’s recent medical reports, which were handed over to Zachary. Sitting in a chair, he flipped through the documents with increasing unease.
He already knew Cecilia had been hospitalized before, after attempting suicide by overdosing on medication. That’s when they discovered her pregnancy. But as he read further, the records painted a darker picture. Her medical history detailed progressive hearing impairment, frequent ear bleeding, severe depression, memory decline, and infertility.
Her cause of death was long-term depression, overconsumption of sleeping pills, mental disarray, and self-inflicted wrist slashing leading to death from excessive blood loss. The more Zachary read, the more disturbing it became.
Beside him, the hospital director sighed, his voice filled with sorrow. “Such a wonderful girl, so young. How did she endure so much suffering? She saved your life four years ago. You must help her now.”
Zachary froze, surprised by the director’s words. “What did you say?” he asked, his brow furrowing. “It wasn’t her who saved me. It was someone else.”
The director seemed puzzled. “Someone else? No, I remember it clearly. It was this young lady who saved you. She got a long cut on her arm from glass while trying to help you. Look at these photos.”
The director’s eyes softened as he recalled the event from years ago. He hadn’t been in his current position back then, but he vividly remembered the young woman who had rushed into the hospital covered in blood. It was because of her that he had been promoted.
The director’s voice grew quiet as he explained how Cecilia had saved Zachary’s life. The scar on her arm, the one left by the glass, was still etched in his memory. “It’s hard to imagine how a young girl could endure such pain without shedding a tear, only worried about saving someone else.”
Zachary’s heart clenched as he examined the photos more closely. Sure enough, Cecilia’s delicate arm bore a long, faded scar. His eyes widened as a wave of guilt and disbelief washed over him.
