Chapter 37 He Refuses To Believe
A soft, frail voice echoed from the other end of the video call, where a little boy resembling Jonathan lay on a hospital bed. His face was pale, and he weakly called out to Cecilia. A surge of tenderness filled her heart.
“Muacks, Eli!” she greeted him.
Elliot’s eyes, though filled with a hint of melancholy, also carried a subtle complaint. “Mommy, you didn’t even call me last night to say goodnight.”
In contrast to his older brother Jonathan, who was considerate and mature, Elliot was more like a typical child—someone who loved to be pampered and often felt insecure. At least that’s how Cecilia saw it.
“Sorry, I forgot, sweetie. Don’t be mad, okay, Eli?” Cecilia apologized.
Given that Elliot had always been frail and was now diagnosed with leukemia, Cecilia paid him extra attention and care.
Elliot pouted playfully. “I’ll let you off the hook this time. There won’t be a next time, you know.”
Watching the little one act so cute, the dark cloud that had been hanging over Cecilia’s heart was instantly lifted. She smiled and nodded in agreement, her mood improving.
“Where are Martha and Jonathan?” she asked.
Upon hearing this, Elliot feigned annoyance. “Had I known you were going to ask about them, I wouldn’t have bothered calling you.”
Cecilia couldn’t help but laugh at how well her younger son played the part of a scorned lover.
“All right, I won’t ask about them anymore. It’s getting late, so you should rest soon. Goodnight,” Cecilia said.
After hanging up, Elliot’s smile quickly disappeared, and he looked gloomily at his twin brother, who was sitting in front of his laptop.
“Mommy has been drinking again,” Elliot remarked.
Hearing this, Jonathan closed his laptop with a click. “It seems I must return to Tudela first, to take care of her.”
“Yeah,” Elliot replied, closing his eyes.
If not for his health issues, he would have wished to return and meet his despicable father. But that was a matter for another time.
Cecilia remained unaware of the two boys’ plans. After freshening up, she lay down on the bed, clutching the two rabbit plushies. Perhaps it was the unfamiliar bed, or maybe the encounter with Nathaniel earlier that day, but sleep eluded her. She drifted in and out of a restless slumber.
The next morning, Cecilia woke up and glanced at the time—it was just after five. At that moment, she noticed an unread message.
It was from one of the personal bodyguards assigned to her by Calvin, Sven Lindberg.
Sven: Ms. Smith, after you returned yesterday, I noticed a car followed you here, and it hasn’t left since.
The message had been sent at three in the morning.
Cecilia replied: Is it still there now?
Sven: Yes.
Cecilia didn’t need to think for a second to know that it was one of Nathaniel’s men keeping watch on her.
She quickly reassured Sven. Don’t worry. I need to get closer to Nathaniel anyway. Having someone follow me will work in my favor.
After breakfast, Cecilia stepped out and instructed the driver to head toward Rainsworth Group.
Meanwhile, in the CEO’s office at Rainsworth Group, Nathaniel sat with the check worth millions in his hand, his mind swirling with thoughts.
Fifty million… It seems she’s been doing well for herself these past four years, Nathaniel mused.
Overnight, Mason had initiated an investigation into Cecilia, and he now had some news to report.
Upon reviewing the surveillance footage, Mason hesitated before speaking. “We only know that Ms. Smith was in the public area last night. We checked the airport, high-speed trains, and similar locations, but there’s no record of her coming or going. Just like before, it’s as if someone deliberately erased her tracks…”
Nathaniel pressed his lips together, deep in thought.
She had been gone for four years, so he refused to believe her sudden reappearance was simply a coincidence.
Mason continued, his voice a bit uncertain. “Ms. Smith’s return this time is unusual. The people we’ve sent reported that the area where she resides has incredibly tight security.”
Nathaniel’s gaze hardened, and he looked up at Mason. “If she runs away again, you can forget about staying in Tudela.”
