Chapter 43
Upon hearing Roxanne’s promise, Jonathan smiled, his tone light and reassuring. “Your words have put my mind at ease. I’ll get the contract drafted tomorrow. When it’s ready, all you’ll need to do is sign it.”
Roxanne nodded, acknowledging his words with a smile of her own. With the matter of the reward settled, Jonathan personally escorted her to the door. He stood on the porch, watching as her car disappeared into the night. Only once she was out of sight did he return to the house and pull out his phone to call Lucian.
“How is Old Mr. Queen?” Lucian’s voice came through the line, accompanied by the faint sound of water flowing in the background.
Jonathan answered with a grin, clearly pleased with the outcome. “He’s awake. Dr. Jarvis really is something else.”
Curious about the interaction he’d witnessed earlier between Lucian and Roxanne, he asked, “Lucian, do you know Dr. Jarvis from before? I just felt like there was something off between the two of you. And I’ve never seen you act that way with another woman.”
Jonathan’s tone hinted at both confusion and curiosity. He’d been puzzled by Lucian’s behavior—how he had made things difficult for Roxanne earlier, yet still stepped in to help her, even insisting that Frieda apologize. At first, Jonathan had thought Lucian didn’t take Roxanne seriously, but after seeing how he had defended her, he was no longer so sure. His intuition told him there was more to the relationship than met the eye.
Lucian’s tone grew colder as he responded. “I don’t know her. If I did, I would have already asked her to treat Old Mr. Queen.”
Before Jonathan could ask further, Lucian abruptly hung up, leaving him staring at his phone.
Jonathan furrowed his brow, his curiosity piqued. Is that really true? Do they not know each other? Something about Lucian’s tone struck him as odd. It felt almost like he was hiding something, but Jonathan had learned long ago not to pry too much into Lucian’s business.
By the time Roxanne reached home, the house was quiet, save for the sound of small Lego pieces clicking together in the living room. Madilyn was playing with the boys, and the moment they saw Roxanne, they abandoned their toys and rushed to greet her.
“Mommy!” Isabel and Liam shouted in unison, throwing themselves into her arms. “Why did you come back so late? We were already falling asleep.”
They yawned in tandem, their eyes barely staying open. Roxanne chuckled softly, tousling their hair. “I’m sorry for keeping you all waiting. I lost track of time.”
She glanced over at Madilyn, who was watching them with a knowing smile. Madilyn raised a hand before Roxanne could speak. “Don’t worry about it. They’re my godsons after all. But you… have you eaten? It’s already so late.”
Roxanne shook her head, realizing just how hungry she was now that she thought about it. “I didn’t have a chance to eat. I got caught up with work.”
Madilyn shook her head with mock disapproval. “I knew this would happen when you’re busy. I saved you some dinner. You should eat before you collapse.”
The boys eagerly led Roxanne to the dining table, urging her to eat as they joined her. Touched by their care, Roxanne sat down and began to eat, enjoying the comforting warmth of their company. She ate quickly, her hunger catching up with her after a long day.
As she finished, Madilyn raised a question. “Considering how late you came back tonight, is the patient’s condition serious? How’s the progress?”
Roxanne nodded, her smile returning as she placed her fork down. “It is serious, but I’m confident I can cure him. And not only that—I think I’ll be able to solve the supply issue at the research institute as well.”
Her mood lifted as she thought about the promising future ahead. Madilyn smiled in response, her faith in Roxanne unwavering. “If you’re confident, I know you’ll make it happen. You always do.”
The warmth of her friends and family, combined with the promising prospects for the future, made Roxanne feel like everything was starting to fall into place.
