Chapter 45
Knowing that Madilyn had already helped her pick up the boys for two consecutive days, Roxanne decided to pick them up herself this time. After finishing her work in the morning, she headed over to the Queen residence in the afternoon.
Once there, she checked on Alfred’s condition to ensure there were no complications. Satisfied with his progress, she proceeded with his treatment, inserting the needles as planned.
While she was waiting for the right time to remove the needles, Jonathan approached her with a document in hand. “Dr. Jarvis, here’s the contract I’ve prepared. If everything looks good to you, just sign it.”
Roxanne wasn’t surprised by his visit; they had discussed this the night before. She carefully read through the contract, making sure everything was in order before signing her name at the bottom.
With the contract finalized, Jonathan’s demeanor toward her became warmer. “From now on, we’re partners. However, we’ll still need your expertise to help with Grandpa’s condition.”
Roxanne nodded, her expression sincere. “That’s the least I can do.”
After a brief conversation, Roxanne glanced at the time and noticed it was nearly late. She quickly removed the needles from Alfred’s body and packed her things. Though she’d tried her best to hurry, it was clear the boys’ school day had already ended by the time she finished.
Hastily, she left the house, driving to the kindergarten. She couldn’t help but wonder if they were waiting for her anxiously since she hadn’t informed them of the delay.
When she arrived, the school grounds were eerily quiet—there were no students in sight, only a few lingering teachers finishing up their work. As she scanned the surroundings, she spotted the boys sitting alone on a small bench in the field, with no teacher around.
Roxanne’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurried toward them.
“Mommy!” The moment the boys saw her, they jumped up and ran to her.
She knelt down and embraced them, her hands gently stroking their faces. “I’m so sorry, I lost track of time at work.”
Archie smiled and shook his head in understanding. “It’s okay, Mommy. We’re safe here at kindergarten. There’s a teacher with us, so there’s no need to worry.”
Benny nodded in agreement, his face bright with reassurance.
Roxanne, still puzzled, asked, “A teacher?”
Archie pointed towards the far corner of the field. Following his finger, Roxanne saw a teacher near the slide. The woman was kneeling down, speaking with a little girl, who was sitting rigidly with her hands on her knees. The little girl was staring at them with an intense gaze, her expression serious but calm.
Roxanne’s eyes widened as recognition struck her.
Wait… That’s Lucian’s daughter, Estella. Is she studying here too?
At first, Estella had been quietly observing Archie and Benny, but the moment she saw Roxanne, her face lit up with a warm smile. She seemed excited to greet Roxanne, but before she could speak, Roxanne turned her gaze away, causing Estella’s smile to fade.
The little girl stared at them with a dejected expression, clearly hurt by the subtle rejection.
“Mommy, are you okay?” Archie asked, noticing her distracted expression. He reached up to gently shake her hand.
Roxanne quickly snapped back to reality and forced a smile. “I’m fine, sweetheart, don’t worry.”
Benny, eager to move on, grabbed her hand excitedly. “In that case, let’s go home!”
