Chapter 66
Aubree’s eyes flickered with a mixture of emotions as she absorbed Frieda’s words.
Having been rejected by Lucian and now learning that Roxanne had returned to the country, Aubree no longer had the luxury of waiting. In the past few days, she’d been doing everything she could to link herself to him, trying to gain an identity that would make her stand out.
Earlier that morning, she had sent Elias and Sonya to persuade Lucian, hoping he’d listen to his parents and change his mind. But once again, she had hit a brick wall. To make matters worse, she’d had to endure Estella’s presence all day. With the couple there, she couldn’t even bring herself to throw a tantrum.
Frustrated by the day’s events, she had asked Frieda out for shopping to try and unwind. But what she hadn’t expected was to hear news that would only fuel her anger further.
Countless renowned doctors had struggled with Old Mr. Queen’s condition, yet Roxanne had managed to treat him successfully. And on top of that, Jonathan had signed a contract with her, agreeing to supply medicinal herbs to her research institute at half the price. Was all her effort to rally the herb suppliers in Horington to boycott Roxanne’s research institute for nothing?
Aubree’s gaze hardened as she thought about it. “Didn’t I arrange for a medical team to treat Old Mr. Queen? Were they not effective? Why did she take over his treatment?”
As she spoke, her eyes locked onto Roxanne from across the room, fury simmering within her. I’ve done everything I can, yet she still managed to secure a supplier in Horington. She must have been laughing at me behind my back.
Frieda hesitated for a moment before replying, her voice cautious. “It’s not that the medical team you arranged wasn’t effective. It’s just that… she came to us. She convinced my brother to let her take over the treatment. Grandpa’s condition really has improved after her sessions, and because of that, my brother decided she’d be in charge going forward.”
Frieda’s words stung, but nothing she said would change the situation now.
Aubree’s mind raced, but she kept her tone polite, masking her frustration with practiced ease. “I had no idea, Ms. Jarvis. You certainly have more capabilities than I imagined, considering even a professional medical team couldn’t compare to you alone.”
Roxanne didn’t even look up as she swiped a finger across the screen of her phone, replying in a calm, measured tone, “There’s plenty you don’t know, Ms. Pearson. Are you planning to continue sabotaging me now that you’ve heard I signed a contract with the Queen family?”
Aubree’s eyes narrowed, and her gaze turned cold, but she feigned innocence as she responded, “What do you mean by that? I’m grateful that you cured Old Mr. Queen. How could I possibly sabotage you?”
Roxanne didn’t have the patience to entertain her anymore. “You know exactly what I mean, and frankly, I don’t care if you continue trying to sabotage me.”
Aubree’s face darkened, and she was silent for a moment, her fury palpable.
Seeing the tension escalate, Frieda cautiously stepped in. “Aubree, do you two… know each other well?”
Aubree sneered, her hostility toward Roxanne no longer concealed. “Not only do we know each other, but you could say that fate has bound us together rather tightly.”
She turned to Roxanne, her voice dripping with provocation. “Isn’t that right, Ms. Jarvis?”
Roxanne had just finished paying when she heard that. Raising her eyes, she scanned the two women standing before her, her expression cool. “I don’t think I can agree with that, Ms. Pearson. I’m really not that close with you, so I’d appreciate it if you didn’t make such claims again. It’s rather troubling.”
Aubree’s expression stiffened, and her eyes blazed with anger.
Roxanne didn’t give her a chance to respond. “It’s getting late. You should head into the restaurant. I’ll leave you both to your meal.”
She gave them a curt nod and, without a second glance, turned on her heel, leading Archie and Benny out of the restaurant. She walked away without hesitation, leaving the two women fuming behind her.
