Chapter 90
Aubree’s gaze never left Lucian, and when she saw him glance at Roxanne in response to the marriage question, a surge of envy burned within her.
“There’s no need to rush the wedding,” Lucian replied, his eyes still lingering on Roxanne.
Ah! Let’s see how calm she stays after hearing that.
Roxanne was briefly taken aback by his reply, but she quickly regained her composure. So what if they weren’t married yet? It’s only a matter of time before they do. Why should I be surprised?
With that thought, Roxanne lowered her gaze and continued eating as though the entire conversation had nothing to do with her.
Aubree, on the other hand, was taken aback by Lucian’s words. How strange. When I last spoke to him about the wedding, he hinted at wanting to call it off. Why would he change his mind now?
Alfred frowned at Lucian’s reply, clearly dissatisfied with his response. But before he could voice his concerns, Aubree quickly intervened.
“Lucian’s right. There’s no rush,” she said hastily, trying to deflect attention. “Old Mr. Queen, we’re doing just fine. Besides, it’s not easy for Lucian to find time to visit you, so let’s not focus on us. Let’s talk about happier things!”
She could feel the tension rising. If the topic dragged on any longer, Lucian might reveal his true intentions of calling off their engagement. I can’t let that happen, especially not in front of Roxanne. That would be humiliating!
Jonathan, ever perceptive, noticed Aubree’s discomfort and added, “That’s just Lucian. He’s so dedicated to his work. Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’m sure Lucian has his own plans.”
“I understand that work is important,” Alfred muttered, “but at some point, you have to prioritize your personal life. It’s been so many years, and Estella still doesn’t have a mother to care for her. It pains me to see that.”
Aubree, clearly flustered, gave a vague response.
As the conversation turned to Estella, Roxanne felt a pang in her heart. No wonder the little girl always clings to me. It’s because she doesn’t have a mother.
Lost in her thoughts, Roxanne suddenly heard Alfred’s voice calling her name.
“What about you, Dr. Jarvis? Are you married?”
Roxanne snapped out of her reverie, a moment of stunned silence before answering. “No. Not yet.”
Alfred’s eyes twinkled as he studied her. A satisfied smile formed on his lips. “What do you think of Jonathan? Would you consider him?”
After several treatments, Alfred had come to admire Roxanne. It would certainly be a pleasant thought if she were to become part of their family as his granddaughter-in-law.
Roxanne, caught off guard by the question, stared at Alfred, speechless.
Frieda, not hiding her disdain, rolled her eyes. “Stop trying to play matchmaker, Grandpa. No matter how talented Dr. Jarvis is, she already has children. And from what I know, they’re not very young either. How could you ask Jonathan to marry a divorcee with kids? You might be okay with it, but I certainly am not!”
“Well, I didn’t know that,” Alfred muttered, genuinely surprised.
“Yes, I’ve been divorced. I don’t think I’d be a good match for Mr. Queen,” Roxanne admitted, her voice steady.
Alfred’s expression darkened slightly, and he disapproved. “So what if you’re a divorcee? With your talents, I’m sure you have no shortage of suitors. What nonsense are you talking about not being good enough? If you two fall in love, I’ll be the first to approve of it!”
Roxanne was touched by Alfred’s enthusiasm and chuckled softly. “Thank you for thinking so highly of me, Old Mr. Queen. Unfortunately, I don’t think Jonathan and I are suited for each other. But don’t worry, I’ll keep looking for a suitable partner.”
“Yes, it must be tough being a single mother. Just make sure to marry once you find the right person,” Alfred said, nodding with a smile.
Roxanne nodded in agreement, her heart warmed by his understanding.
As the conversation continued, Lucian observed the exchange between Alfred and Roxanne with a growing sense of discomfort. His gaze darkened as he watched them interact.
