Chapter 65
Roxanne wasn’t familiar with the restaurants in the area, so she decided to ask Madilyn for a recommendation and brought Archie and Benny to the chosen spot.
As they were enjoying their meal, Roxanne received a message from Jonathan: Is treatment needed tonight, Dr. Jarvis?
It was then that Roxanne remembered she hadn’t explained the treatment process to him. She quickly replied: Old Mr. Queen is still a bit weak, so treatment can’t be done too frequently. He’s already had two consecutive sessions. Let him rest for today, and I’ll visit tomorrow. Apologies for not letting you know sooner.
Jonathan’s reply came swiftly: Okay. I’ll be waiting for you whenever you’re ready.
Archie and Benny, noticing their mother texting during dinner, looked up curiously. “Is something wrong, Mommy?”
With a smile, Roxanne took some food for them both. “No, the patient from the other day was just asking if I’m coming over.”
The boys nodded understandingly. “You’ve worked hard, Mommy. You should eat more.”
Roxanne’s heart swelled at their thoughtfulness.
Dinner passed pleasantly, and afterward, Roxanne led her sons to the counter to pay the bill. Just as they were about to settle up, she noticed two familiar figures making their way toward them.
Aubree and Frieda walked into the restaurant, arm-in-arm, chatting and laughing, their closeness obvious.
Roxanne hesitated, instinctively scanning the area. She wanted to slip into the crowd and avoid confrontation. After all, both women had been unfriendly toward her—Aubree had long held a grudge, even organizing a boycott against her research institute with various medicinal herb suppliers in Horington. Frieda, meanwhile, had continually belittled her medical skills and ridiculed her at every opportunity.
The two women clearly had a strong bond, and Roxanne had no doubt that Frieda would happily join forces with Aubree to speak ill of her.
Normally, she might have brushed them off and walked right past, but with Archie and Benny with her, she didn’t want to create a scene in front of them.
Just as she was about to guide her sons away, Frieda’s voice rang out with a mocking tone. “Well, well, Dr. Jarvis! What a coincidence, here for dinner too?”
Roxanne’s brows furrowed slightly, but she planned to ignore it.
However, the boys thought she hadn’t heard and tugged at her sleeve. “Someone’s calling you, Mommy.”
Reluctantly, Roxanne halted and turned to face Frieda with a calm expression. “It is indeed a coincidence. But I’ve already finished eating, so I’ll leave you both to enjoy your meal. Excuse me.”
With that, she gently led Archie and Benny toward the counter to pay.
Frieda’s voice sounded again, her tone dripping with disdain. “You two know each other?”
Aubree looked at Frieda, her curiosity piqued. Frieda nodded, a sneer playing on her lips as she glanced at Roxanne and her sons, who were nearly out of earshot. “Don’t flatter me. I’m not worthy of being acquainted with someone as talented as Dr. Jarvis. So many people have struggled with my grandfather’s illness, but she just jabbed a few needles into him, and he regained consciousness. My brother thinks so highly of her now. In fact, her status is way above mine.”
Aubree’s expression shifted, her demeanor cooling. “Wait, what did you say? Why did you hire her to treat Old Mr. Queen?”
Frieda scoffed. “We didn’t hire her. She came to us. As for why… I suspect it’s because she’s interested in our family’s medicinal herbs. My brother signed a contract with her the moment my grandfather woke up.”
Her eyes narrowed as she threw a venomous glare in Roxanne’s direction. “She doesn’t know her place. My brother only mentioned it once, and she immediately agreed. The contract was signed, and now, if anything happens to my grandfather, it’ll be on her head.”
