Chapter 91
After dinner, Alfred returned to his room to rest. Roxanne followed him to give him one last check-up before heading downstairs to say her goodbyes.
“It’s getting late. Let me give you a lift home,” Jonathan offered.
“No, it’s fine,” Roxanne replied with a smile. “You still have guests to entertain.”
Jonathan realized she was right and didn’t press the issue. “In that case, please be careful on your way home. And just so you know, don’t take my grandfather’s words too seriously. At his age, he tends to worry about things like that.”
Roxanne smiled and nodded before turning to leave.
As she was walking out of the mansion, Lucian’s voice interrupted her. “It’s getting late, and I still have work to do. I’ll be taking my leave now.”
Aubree, now more cautious, quickly added, “Oh, I’m thinking of leaving too. Let’s go together, then.”
“No. Our routes aren’t the same,” Lucian replied indifferently, walking off before Aubree could say anything more.
Aubree stood frozen for a moment, her face showing shock. Jonathan, who had been observing, frowned, sensing something was off between Lucian and the two women. He couldn’t quite pinpoint what was wrong, but the tension was undeniable.
“Aubree?” Frieda mumbled, puzzled by her friend’s stunned reaction.
Thankfully, Aubree snapped back to reality and forced a smile. “Well, I still have work to do, so I shouldn’t disturb you guys any longer.”
Jonathan and Frieda exchanged a glance but didn’t press her any further. After a few more polite words, they saw her off.
Once back inside the mansion, Jonathan turned to his sister. “Hey, how did you know Dr. Jarvis has kids?”
Frieda pursed her lips. “I saw them when I was out for lunch with Aubree. Oh, and I also found out she’s Lucian’s ex-wife! I can’t believe she had the nerve to come back!”
Jonathan was momentarily taken aback, but then everything clicked.
No wonder there’s been tension between Dr. Jarvis and Lucian. She’s the woman from six years ago.
Meanwhile, after leaving the mansion and getting into her car, Roxanne still felt unsettled by the conversations at the dinner table. She took a moment to collect herself, finally starting the car once she felt calm enough.
Just as she was about to pull away, there was a knock on her window. Roxanne quickly turned her head toward the sound, and when she saw who it was, she looked away, pretending she hadn’t heard it.
But the person outside knocked again, leaning down to peer into the car.
Roxanne knew no one could see her from the outside, but she still tensed up. After a brief moment of hesitation, she finally rolled down the window. “What is it?”
It was Lucian standing there. When he heard her voice, he raised an eyebrow and spoke calmly. “I didn’t drive here today. Would you mind giving me a lift, if it’s convenient?”
He reached for the car door, and before Roxanne could react, Lucian had already entered the car and settled into the passenger seat. He fastened his seatbelt and added, “Let’s go.”
Roxanne, still a little stunned, finally regained her composure, though she wasn’t pleased. “Where’s your chauffeur?”
“It’s already late,” Lucian replied, “and since I can easily get a ride, why should I bother him to come all the way here?”
Roxanne was rendered speechless by his response, but after a moment, she managed to speak. “If I remember correctly, Ms. Pearson hasn’t left either. I think she’d be happy to give you a lift.”
