Chapter 88
By the time the treatment was finished, Frieda had returned home.
Upon hearing from the butler that Roxanne was treating Alfred, she headed straight for his bedroom.
“Grandpa, how are you feeling?” Frieda asked with concern the moment she stepped into the room.
Alfred gave a small nod. “Much better.”
Having lived for so long, Alfred had gained a deep understanding of traditional medicine and had consulted many well-known doctors. But Roxanne had been a pleasant surprise. After every course of her treatment, he could feel significant improvement in his health, something even the world’s best doctors had never been able to achieve.
Frieda studied her grandfather closely and smiled. “That’s good to hear.”
She then turned to Aubree, who had been quietly standing by. “Aubree, are you here to visit Grandpa too? Since it’s getting late, why don’t you stay for dinner?”
Naturally, Aubree didn’t object and smiled broadly. “In that case, I’d be happy to stay and keep you company, Old Mr. Queen.”
Alfred chuckled warmly and nodded his approval.
Now that Frieda was home, Roxanne hurriedly packed her tools, eager to leave and avoid any further interaction with the women.
Just as she was about to leave, Alfred spoke up again, his tone light and inviting. “Dr. Jarvis, why don’t you stay for dinner too? It would be a good opportunity for me to thank you properly.”
Roxanne froze, momentarily unsure of what to say. She was about to come up with an excuse when Alfred added, “Invite Lucian as well. It’ll be nice to have everyone together for a meal. We can treat it as a celebration of my recovery. Besides, it’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to enjoy a proper meal.”
At that, Jonathan, ever obedient to his grandfather’s wishes, quickly left the room to call Lucian.
Roxanne’s heart skipped a beat. After quickly packing up her things, she stood up and said, “Since this is a family dinner, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to stay. If you really wish to thank me, we can always find another time, Old Mr. Queen.”
Though Roxanne had crossed paths with Lucian multiple times since her return from overseas and was aware of his relationship with Aubree, the thought of seeing them together made her uneasy. In fact, just the idea of them sitting next to each other was enough to make her feel sick. It was no wonder she was in such a hurry to leave.
It was clear that Roxanne was reluctant to stay, and it didn’t take long for Frieda to catch on.
“But you’re Grandpa’s lifesaver, Dr. Jarvis,” Frieda said with a sardonic smile. “Let’s dispense with the formalities. This is Grandpa’s way of showing his appreciation. Please, join us for dinner if you have no other plans later.”
Roxanne’s brows furrowed, sensing that Frieda had ulterior motives.
Just as she was about to decline, Jonathan, who had just hung up the phone, overheard Frieda’s words. He assumed his sister was simply being a good host and chimed in, “Lucian will be coming over soon. You’ve met him before. I’m sure he’d appreciate an update on Grandpa’s recovery, so it would be helpful if you stayed to answer his questions.”
Unable to refuse, Roxanne reluctantly agreed.
Frieda, ever the schemer, smiled smugly and hooked her arm through Aubree’s. She shot Roxanne a mocking glance, clearly pleased with herself.
“Well, well, well. I can’t believe the doctor really has the nerve to stay,” Frieda thought to herself.
It seemed Frieda had only insisted on Roxanne staying because of Lucian’s impending arrival. She was eager to watch how Roxanne would react when faced with Lucian and another woman.
“Oh, this will be interesting,” Frieda mused.
