Chapter 89
Before heading downstairs, Alfred turned to Roxanne with a question. “Do you think I’m well enough to get out of bed?”
Roxanne gave him a reassuring nod, and with Jonathan and the butler’s assistance, Alfred slowly made his way down the stairs.
At the dining table, Roxanne kept her head down, doing her best to remain unnoticed. However, it seemed that Frieda was determined to make things uncomfortable, deliberately directing questions at both Aubree and her from time to time.
For Alfred’s sake, Roxanne answered each one with a polite smile, keeping her composure.
After a while, the butler’s voice echoed through the room. “Mr. Farwell.”
A brief response followed from Lucian’s deep voice, and soon enough, his tall, lean figure appeared in the doorway.
“Hello, Old Mr. Queen,” Lucian greeted, his gaze sweeping over the room. When his eyes met Roxanne’s, he paused for just a moment.
Roxanne clenched her fists under the table but met his gaze, nodding at him calmly.
Lucian raised his brows, offering a small smile in return.
“Take a seat, Lucian. Aubree’s been waiting for you all day,” Frieda said warmly, motioning for him to sit beside Aubree.
Earlier, she had used the excuse of Alfred wanting to thank Roxanne to maneuver herself and Jonathan into sitting beside the doctor. The only available seat now was next to Aubree.
Aubree, knowing Lucian’s closer relationship with Alfred, immediately stood and offered her seat to him. Now, Lucian was seated beside Alfred and directly opposite Roxanne.
The moment Lucian sat down across from her, Roxanne felt a wave of tension. She quickly lowered her gaze, attempting to regain her composure.
As dinner began, she focused quietly on her meal, only speaking when Alfred addressed her.
Meanwhile, Aubree, more concerned with Lucian’s reaction toward Roxanne than anything else, tried her best to keep his attention. Even when serving food to Alfred, she would glance at Lucian, initiating conversations to keep him from looking too much in Roxanne’s direction.
Roxanne, unaware of Aubree’s intentions, couldn’t help but notice how natural their conversation seemed, almost as if they were a family. This only heightened the unease brewing inside her.
Frieda, noticing Roxanne’s calm demeanor, turned to Aubree and teasingly remarked, “Aubree, you and Lucian look so much in love! Have you set a date for your wedding yet? I’m still waiting for my invitation to be your bridesmaid!”
Roxanne froze at her words.
What did she mean by that? Aren’t Lucian and Aubree married yet?
Aubree’s smile also faltered slightly, clearly caught off guard by the unexpected mention of a wedding.
As she thought about how to steer the conversation away from the topic, she noticed Alfred’s concerned gaze on them. “That’s right. You two have been together for so long. Even Estella is growing up. Isn’t it time to settle down?”
“Yes, you should’ve gotten married ages ago. I don’t understand why you’ve put it off until now,” Jonathan added, playfully teasing.
Everyone’s eyes turned to Lucian, waiting for his response.
Lucian didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he cast a brief glance at the woman sitting opposite him.
Though the moment was fleeting, it didn’t go unnoticed by those at the table.
Roxanne clenched her fists again, trying to suppress the swirling doubts in her mind. She lifted her gaze to meet Lucian’s.
Their eyes locked for an instant, and Lucian noticed the indifference on her face. His brows furrowed slightly, a trace of displeasure settling in his chest.
