Chapter 87
Roxanne quickly composed herself, turning her gaze from Aubree to Jonathan.
Sharp-eyed as always, Jonathan picked up on the tension in the room. He casually stepped closer to Roxanne, subtly blocking Aubree’s view as he did so.
“Dr. Jarvis, my grandfather is waiting for you upstairs. Shall we go up now?” Jonathan suggested.
Roxanne gave a quick nod in agreement.
Jonathan turned to Aubree with a polite smile. “Excuse us, Ms. Pearson,” he said before leading Roxanne toward the stairs.
As they made their way up, Aubree’s voice called out again. “Ms. Jarvis, I’ve heard how much your treatment has helped Old Mr. Queen. I think I’ll take this chance to visit him and see your work firsthand.”
Roxanne furrowed her brow at the interruption, clearly displeased. However, since Jonathan didn’t object, she chose to ignore Aubree’s presence and continue onward.
Alfred had improved significantly under Roxanne’s care, and he was now well enough to move back into his bedroom. When they reached his room, they found him sitting up in bed, looking alert and in high spirits.
“Grandpa, Dr. Jarvis is here,” Jonathan announced as he led Roxanne into the room.
Upon hearing this, Alfred gave Roxanne a warm smile of gratitude. “Dr. Jarvis, thank you so much for all you’ve done for me. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Although Alfred had seen Roxanne during previous treatments, his condition had been too poor for him to properly express his thanks. Now, after a few days of recovery, he finally had the strength to show his appreciation.
“Don’t mention it, Old Mr. Queen,” Roxanne replied, her smile polite. “As a doctor, it’s my duty to help my patients. It’s truly rewarding to see you on the mend.”
Without further ado, she sat beside the bed and began sterilizing her tools, her focus entirely on the task at hand.
Seeing how professional and dedicated she was, Alfred’s admiration for Roxanne grew even more.
Aubree, however, was visibly upset at Alfred’s reaction. She quickly moved to sit next to him, blocking his view of Roxanne.
“Hello, Old Mr. Queen,” Aubree said, her voice dripping with sweetness.
Alfred, momentarily distracted, noticed Aubree’s presence and nodded politely. “Ah, Aubree, you’re here too.”
Aubree smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “When I heard that you’d woken up, I wanted to come see you right away,” she explained, sitting down beside him. “But I’ve been so busy with work that I couldn’t find the time. Thankfully, I managed to free up my schedule today, so I rushed over as soon as I could.”
Aubree glanced at Roxanne, her gaze icy. “Lucian was supposed to come as well, but he’s tied up with work. He sent his regards and asked me to tell you that he’s relieved you’re getting better.”
Alfred beamed with gratitude. “You and Lucian are such good kids. You’re both so busy, yet you still take the time to find me a doctor. I’m truly grateful.”
“There’s no need to be formal, Old Mr. Queen,” Aubree said with a light chuckle, a hint of pride in her voice. “You’re like a grandfather to Lucian and me. It’s only right that we help you however we can.”
As she spoke, her gaze lingered on Roxanne, full of pride and subtle contempt. It was clear from the conversation that Alfred had already begun to view Aubree and Lucian as family.
Rationally, Roxanne knew that their relationship had nothing to do with her. Yet, for reasons she couldn’t quite explain, a strange feeling of unease gnawed at her.
After sterilizing all of her tools, Roxanne took a deep breath to center herself. She turned to Aubree and Alfred. “Please step aside, Ms. Pearson. It’s time to begin the treatment.”
Aubree was still engaged in conversation with Alfred when Roxanne’s voice caused her to look up.
With no choice but to step back, Aubree reluctantly dropped her smile, her jaw tightening as she moved aside.
