Chapter 44
After a bit of idle chatter, Madilyn decided it was time to head home, as the night was already late. Meanwhile, the boys, full of energy, followed Roxanne around the house.
After tidying up the living room, she finally found a moment to sit down with them.
“Did you enjoy yourselves at kindergarten today? Did you get into any fights with your friends?” she asked with a playful tone.
The boys exchanged a look before nodding vigorously. “We had a great time! And after school, they even gave us a lot of snacks!” Benny exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Roxanne couldn’t help but smile. “It seems like you two are really popular,” she teased, making the boys beam.
Benny, proud of his popularity, turned to glance at Archie. “In fact, there’s a girl who said she wants to marry Archie when she grows up!”
Roxanne raised an eyebrow in amusement. “Really?” she asked, looking at her son.
Archie, slightly taken aback by his brother’s declaration, blushed a deep shade of red. “Y-Yes, but I didn’t agree to it,” he stammered, looking away.
Benny, not missing an opportunity to tease his brother, pinched Archie’s ear. “Too bad, Archie! Someone already has a crush on you!” he said, grinning mischievously.
Roxanne watched them with a heart full of warmth, her smile wide. The sight of the boys fooling around made her feel content, and for a moment, she allowed herself to simply enjoy the innocence of their playfulness.
As they chatted about their day, with Benny sharing the details and Archie offering his usual succinct summaries, Roxanne listened intently, her laughter ringing out occasionally at their cute antics. Time flew by, and before long, it was nearly ten.
“Okay, time for bed,” she said, adopting a serious expression. “You still have school tomorrow.”
Both boys groaned but obediently headed upstairs for bed. Roxanne followed them for a brief moment before she, too, retired for the night.
The next morning, after dropping the boys off at kindergarten, Roxanne headed straight to the research institute.
Once the morning meeting concluded, she walked out of the conference room alongside Colby.
“How did it go yesterday? Did you manage to treat Old Mr. Queen’s condition?” Colby asked, clearly eager for an update.
Roxanne nodded slightly, her expression thoughtful. “His condition is serious and requires complex treatment, but it’s definitely treatable. It will take some time, though. Since I’ll be visiting him frequently over the next few days, you’ll need to hold down the fort around here.”
Colby couldn’t help but chuckle. “I’m amazed you were able to treat a condition that’s stumped all the famous doctors the Queen family sought out. Dr. Jarvis, you’re making the rest of us look bad!”
Though he joked, there was sincerity behind his words. After all, Colby himself had struggled with Alfred’s condition, just like the other doctors.
Roxanne smiled modestly. “It’s just that it falls within my area of expertise.”
Seeing the nonchalant way she downplayed her success, Colby felt a twinge of admiration. Her confidence was genuine, and it only made him respect her more.
“By the way,” he continued, “even though Old Mr. Queen hasn’t fully recovered, the Queen family has agreed to supply us with the medicine. We should be able to sign the contract today. The first batch will be free of charge, which solves our immediate shortage. After that, we won’t have to worry about supply issues anymore.”
Roxanne’s face lit up with a smile at the news. The thought of securing a steady medicine supply for the institute was a huge relief.
Colby raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Really? The Queen family is willing to sign a contract with us, even though Old Mr. Queen has just regained consciousness?”
Roxanne nodded, her grin widening. “Yes, it seems they were impressed by my treatment.”
Colby let out a low whistle. “It’s clear they’ve been blown away by your medical skills. You really are something, Dr. Jarvis.”
Roxanne chuckled, brushing off his praise. “I’m just doing what I can. I hope there aren’t any setbacks with Old Mr. Queen’s condition, though.”
Colby gave her a reassuring smile. “With you in charge, I’m sure everything will be fine.”
