Chapter 28
Roxanne felt her frustration mounting, her irritation barely contained. It was one thing to deal with the hurdles of the research institute, but now, the sabotage from Aubree was hindering their progress even further. The thought that Aubree’s vendetta against her had persisted for six years—driving her to resort to such underhanded tactics—infuriated Roxanne.
But this wasn’t the time for emotional responses.
Taking a deep breath, Roxanne clenched her fists, forcing herself to focus. She turned to Colby, her voice steady but resolute. “It’s okay. If we can’t find a solution here in Horington, we’ll look to other cities. There has to be someone willing to collaborate with us.”
Though she kept her tone neutral, Roxanne was well aware of the additional costs and time that such a move would entail. She had hoped to find a reliable partner locally, but with every door seemingly closing, that hope was starting to fade.
Colby shook his head, offering a reassuring smile. “No need to go that far,” he said, his tone lighter now.
Roxanne raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Are you saying there’s someone here in Horington who would be willing to work with us? The smaller suppliers are already out of the picture, and we need a bigger operation.”
Colby nodded, looking confident. “I know. But there might be a solution here, and it involves you personally.”
Roxanne frowned, unsure. “What do you mean?”
Colby leaned in slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. “Have you heard of the Queen family?”
“The Queen family?” Roxanne repeated, the name sounding vaguely familiar.
“They’re one of the most prominent families in Horington. They’ve built an empire on supplying medicine. Old Mr. Queen has a solid reputation, but his health has been declining for a while now. The family’s been desperate to find a doctor who can cure him, but none of the renowned specialists have succeeded. I’ve tried myself, but it was beyond me.” Colby paused for a moment, his eyes gleaming with an idea. “However, you might have a chance.”
Roxanne processed this new information, her skepticism evident. “But the Queen family is huge. They won’t be offering the same pricing as these small-time suppliers. I’m sure it won’t be any cheaper than what we’ve been offered so far.”
Colby smiled, shaking his head. “That’s true, but they’ve made an offer before—any doctor who can cure Old Mr. Queen’s condition will be rewarded with expensive medicines. And more importantly, they’ve agreed to future deals where they’ll supply medicine at half price. It’s a golden opportunity.”
Roxanne’s eyes widened, a glimmer of hope shining in them. “Why didn’t you mention this sooner? This could be the breakthrough we need!”
Colby chuckled, scratching the back of his neck. “I thought about it before, but honestly, I didn’t think I was good enough to handle it. Besides, you weren’t here then, so I gave up on the idea. But now that you’re back, I think it’s worth trying. What do you think?”
Roxanne didn’t hesitate for a second. She stood up, her determination now palpable. “Of course! Let’s do it! Please, help me get in touch with the Queen family and set up an appointment for me.”
Seeing the passion in her eyes, Colby’s own heart lifted. It was clear that Roxanne’s commitment to the research institute—and her unwavering resolve to help those in need—was driving her forward. “I’ll make the call now. Wait here,” he said, his tone filled with confidence.
A few moments later, Colby returned, a satisfied grin on his face.
“How did it go?” Roxanne asked eagerly, rising to her feet.
Colby nodded. “We’re in luck. The Queen family is still searching for someone to treat Old Mr. Queen, and knowing that I have a recommendation, they’ve agreed to see you. No hesitation.”
Roxanne’s heart skipped a beat. “When are we going?”
“Tonight,” Colby replied.
Roxanne’s expression brightened. “Perfect. I’ll need all the details on Old Mr. Queen’s symptoms, though. I have to prepare.”
Colby nodded, pulling out his phone to access the information. “I’ll fill you in on everything. Let’s make sure we’re ready.”
As he shared the details with her, Roxanne’s mind raced, already envisioning the steps she would need to take in her treatment plan. The Queen family was a big opportunity, and if she could help Old Mr. Queen, not only would it strengthen the institute’s position, but it could also be the breakthrough they so desperately needed.
The tension of the past few days began to lift, replaced by a renewed sense of hope. Roxanne was ready.
And tonight, she would make her move.
