Chapter 29
Alfred’s condition was anything but simple. It was why even the most renowned doctors had been left uncertain of what to do. Just describing his illness had taken Colby a lengthy explanation, one that Roxanne had absorbed carefully, already planning her approach in her mind.
At six in the evening, after a long day of work, Roxanne made her way to the Queen residence alone, following the address Colby had provided.
When she arrived at the front door, it was a middle-aged man dressed in a butler’s uniform who greeted her. He eyed her curiously, clearly questioning her youth as he asked politely, “Greetings. May I ask who you are?”
Roxanne smiled warmly, meeting his gaze. “Hello, I’m the doctor here to treat Old Mr. Queen. I called earlier this afternoon.”
The butler studied her for a moment longer, a flicker of doubt crossing his face. Is someone this young really capable? But he didn’t voice his suspicion. After a brief pause, he nodded and gestured for her to enter. “Please, follow me.”
She followed him into the estate, unfazed by his doubts. It was one of her principles—never to demand trust before proving her worth. She was used to being scrutinized, especially when it came to her profession.
As they entered the courtyard, she couldn’t help but notice how meticulously the Queen family maintained their estate. The elegance of the surroundings was undeniable, a testament to the family’s concern with appearances and prestige. It was clear the Queen family didn’t cut corners when it came to their reputation.
Inside the mansion, the butler led her to a sitting area, gesturing for her to take a seat on the plush couch. “A visitor came by earlier, and Mr. Queen is accompanying them to meet Old Mr. Queen. I’ll let them know you’ve arrived. Please wait here.”
Roxanne nodded, settling into the couch with a calm demeanor. A few moments later, a housekeeper entered with a tray of coffee, which she graciously accepted.
As she sipped her coffee, Roxanne allowed herself to relax, though her mind couldn’t stop replaying the complex case ahead of her. I must stay focused, she reminded herself.
Soon, the sound of footsteps descending the stairs caught her attention. Roxanne set her cup down and turned toward the staircase.
A young couple appeared at the top, walking down the stairs together. At first glance, they seemed to be siblings—both strikingly good-looking, the man handsome with an air of confidence, and the woman graceful, her beauty evident even from afar. They were speaking to someone behind them, likely the visitor the butler had mentioned earlier.
Roxanne’s gaze followed them as they descended, but her attention quickly shifted when she saw the visitor.
The man was tall, strikingly handsome, and holding a child in his arms. He spoke to the siblings with a relaxed expression, the tone of his voice calm and casual.
Then, as though sensing her gaze, the man turned slowly toward her. Their eyes met, and for a split second, time seemed to stop. Roxanne’s heart skipped a beat.
Lucian! she thought, shock coursing through her. What is he doing here?
Memories of that night rushed to the forefront of her mind—the confrontation, the pain, the confusion.
Her eyes trembled slightly, and for a moment, she almost couldn’t bear to look at him. But she forced herself to regain composure. Clenching her fists tightly to steady herself, she took a deep breath and forced her gaze away, turning toward the siblings on the stairs, focusing on them instead.
But Lucian didn’t move. He stood frozen, his gaze still fixed on her face, as if trying to confirm something in his mind. When she looked away, his expression darkened, and a flicker of recognition passed over him.
It really is Roxanne… he thought, the puzzle pieces clicking into place. I thought she was someone else at first. But why is she here?
His confusion was palpable, but he kept it hidden behind a mask of indifference. His thoughts raced, but outwardly, he remained composed.
“What’s wrong, Lucian?” the man in front of him asked, noticing that he had stopped.
Lucian blinked, snapping out of his thoughts, and quickly looked away. “It’s nothing. Let’s go,” he replied, his tone as emotionless as ever.
The man raised an eyebrow, but nodded nonetheless. “Alright, then.”
The trio continued their descent down the stairs, but Lucian’s mind remained elsewhere, lingering on the woman who had suddenly reappeared in his life.
