Chapter 72
Though Archie wasn’t as technically skilled as Benny, he understood the situation. Pearson Group had made no progress all morning. Now that Benny’s virus had been cracked so quickly, it was clear the opponent was an expert, and certainly not someone from Pearson Group. Given how much time had passed, Pearson Group must have reached out for external help.
“It might be… someone from Farwell Group,” Archie muttered thoughtfully. That was the only plausible explanation. Farwell Group’s technical team had a stellar reputation, and if that woman—Essie’s mom—was involved, it made sense that Pearson Group would turn to Farwell Group for help.
Benny’s expression darkened at the mention of Farwell Group. His anger flared. Though he knew that the woman was Estella’s mother, she was also the one who had tormented his own mother. The thought that Lucian had helped Aubree infuriated him.
No way. I’ll make them pay for this.
With that, Benny picked up the laptop again, his face set in determination. His fingers flew across the keyboard as he prepared for another round.
Meanwhile, the Pearson Group technical department employees gathered around their supervisor’s workstation, watching the genius at work. Lines of code continued to scroll across the screen. Within moments, the cartoon images that had previously plagued their system began to disappear, one by one.
“Is it done?” Aubree asked, standing up eagerly. But before she could express her gratitude, the technician’s expression froze, and her heart sank.
“It should be… but…” The technician hesitated, eyes glued to the screen. A new line of code appeared, simpler than the virus before.
A message popped up: Are you from Farwell Group?
Aubree’s heart skipped a beat. The hacker was speaking directly to them. The technician hesitated before responding: Yes.
Another line of code flashed on the screen: How dare you help that evil woman? I’m angry now!
Before anyone could react, the conversation abruptly disappeared, replaced by a far more complex virus than the one before. Aubree’s face turned a deep shade of purple as she read the exchange.
“What’s going on? Who is this?” she seethed, her anger rising.
The technician, still caught off guard by the sudden attack, continued to battle the virus, but something felt off. The hacker was incredibly skilled, but their words seemed almost childish…
In the afternoon, Cayden noticed that the technician they had sent to Pearson Group hadn’t returned yet. He hesitated before asking, “Mr. Farwell, the person we sent hasn’t come back yet. Should we send someone else?”
Lucian, ever calm, responded, “We’ll wait for Pearson Group to come to us first.” Every request from them would mean they owed Lucian a favor.
Cayden nodded, but then changed the subject. “The executive meeting starts in ten minutes. Should we head over?”
Lucian nodded, and they made their way to the conference room. Along the way, Cayden noticed Lucian occasionally checking his phone.
It was unusual for Lucian to keep his phone close during meetings, but he seemed distracted, glancing at it repeatedly.
After the meeting, Cayden couldn’t hold back his curiosity any longer. “Mr. Farwell, is there something important happening today?” he asked cautiously.
Lucian’s brows furrowed, his face clouded with annoyance. “No,” he replied curtly, his tone icy.
He glanced at his phone again, but there were no new calls. Displeased, he slipped the phone back into his pocket, his thoughts elsewhere.
