Chapter 92: Estella
As soon as Roxanne’s words left her mouth, an awkward silence settled in the car. Realizing what she had said, she immediately felt a pang of regret and lowered her gaze, choosing not to speak further.
Lucian’s gaze remained fixed on her side profile, dark and unreadable.
Does she resist me this much? Why does she always try to push me toward Aubree?
After a long moment, he replied coldly, “She still has something to attend to and doesn’t plan on leaving yet.”
Roxanne gripped the steering wheel, a surge of anger rising within her.
How dare he! Just because Aubree is too busy to give him a lift doesn’t mean I’m obligated to do so!
But with Lucian sitting unmoving in the passenger seat, Roxanne knew she couldn’t simply force him out. Begrudgingly, she started the engine and drove away from the Queens’ mansion.
Outside, Aubree had just exited the mansion and spotted Lucian through the rearview mirror. Her expression darkened immediately, and without a second thought, she hopped into her car and followed them.
Once they were on the main road, Roxanne suddenly remembered something. “Where are you going?”
Lucian, exhausted from a long day at work and a dinner with Alfred, felt the weight of fatigue crash over him. He rubbed his temples to shake off the tiredness. “To the office. I remember it’s on the way for you.”
Roxanne raised an eyebrow in concern. “It’s already so late. Are you still going to work overtime?”
Lucian gave a tired hum, acknowledging her question without much enthusiasm. His exhaustion was evident, and he didn’t feel like saying anything more.
Strangely, he felt a sense of ease when he was around Roxanne, despite the long day.
Seeing that Lucian wasn’t in the mood for conversation, Roxanne chose to focus on driving in silence. Yet, every time her thoughts turned to the man sitting beside her, a flood of questions filled her mind.
She remembered how, before their divorce, Lucian had once said that Aubree was the only woman fit to marry him, and their marriage had been postponed solely because of her. That comment had haunted her for years.
It was only much later that Roxanne had come to terms with everything and decided to give Lucian the freedom he wanted.
She had thought that once she left, he would immediately marry Aubree, but six years had passed, and they still hadn’t tied the knot. What had happened in all that time?
Curiosity piqued, Roxanne glanced at Lucian, on the verge of asking him about it. But she quickly held herself back.
This is a private matter between him and Aubree. What right do I have to ask? Besides, whatever happened between them isn’t my fault.
Lucian closed his eyes, hoping for some peace and quiet. But as soon as he started to relax, a barrage of thoughts suddenly flooded his mind.
What had gotten into him? His chauffeur had been waiting for him outside the mansion, but when he saw Roxanne getting into her car, all he could think of was following her. By the time he realized what he had done, he was already face-to-face with her through the car window. And, of course, he had to get in.
Could it be because I overheard her conversation with Old Mr. Queen? The thought of her marrying someone else… It makes me feel so frustrated!
Just then, Lucian’s phone rang, breaking the silence. He glanced at the caller ID, his expression immediately darkening.
“Mr. Farwell, when are you coming back? Ms. Estella has a fever,” Catalina said anxiously.
Lucian’s face hardened. “Got it. I’ll be right back.”
He hung up the phone and turned to Roxanne. “Can you please take me back to the manor? Essie’s not feeling well, and I need to check on her.”
