Chapter 94
Snapping out of her thoughts, Roxanne quickly composed herself and moved toward them.
Estella was still running a fever, but despite her condition, her eyes sparkled brightly as she gazed up at Roxanne, her face lighting up with recognition.
Roxanne looked at her with concern.
In response, Estella stretched her small arms out, silently asking Roxanne to hold her.
Roxanne’s eyes instinctively flickered to Lucian. She’s sick—why is she asking a stranger to hold her instead of staying with her father? A thought crossed her mind: What will Lucian think of her actions?
To her surprise, Lucian calmly handed Estella over to Roxanne.
After a brief hesitation, Roxanne gently took the little girl into her arms.
The moment she did, she felt the heat radiating from Estella’s small body. It was as though the little girl was a furnace in her arms.
Without thinking twice, Roxanne pressed her cheek to Estella’s forehead to check her temperature. The cooling sensation from her own skin seemed to make Estella relax slightly, her eyes fluttering as she let out a soft sigh.
“You’re running a high fever,” Roxanne murmured softly as she hugged Estella closer. She looked down at the little girl and asked in a quiet voice, “Essie, do you feel uncomfortable?”
Estella nodded silently, her face flushed with fever.
Seeing the redness around Estella’s eyes, Roxanne’s heart ached. Turning to Catalina, she asked, “Has she taken her medicine?”
Catalina quickly nodded. “Yes.”
She watched Roxanne with a curious expression and then asked, “Mrs. Farwell, when did you return?”
Catalina had worked for the Farwell family for some time and had briefly served Roxanne when she was married to Lucian. Back then, she had greatly admired the younger woman. It shocked her that Roxanne had left so suddenly without saying goodbye.
I can’t believe Mrs. Farwell is back!
Roxanne, slightly taken aback by Catalina’s greeting, smiled gently. “I’ve been back for a little while. Please, you don’t need to address me like that. I left the Farwell family six years ago.”
Realization dawned on Catalina as she murmured, “You haven’t changed a bit, so I thought… Never mind, I’ll remember next time.”
Roxanne gave a small nod.
Catalina hesitated, then asked, “Are you here to visit Ms. Estella?”
Roxanne nodded, explaining, “We ran into each other at a patient’s house. When I heard that Essie wasn’t feeling well, I decided to come by and visit her.”
Catalina felt a pang in her chest at that response. “That’s good,” she muttered softly. “Ms. Estella will surely get better quickly if you stay with her.”
Roxanne assumed Catalina was referring to her medical expertise and her ability to help Estella recover. Chuckling lightly, she nodded and assured her, “Don’t worry. I’ll help out if Essie needs anything.”
Catalina felt puzzled by her reply.
Why is Ms. Jarvis acting so formal? Catalina thought. Ms. Estella is her daughter—of course, she should care for her when she’s sick. But… back then, it was Ms. Jarvis who treated my headaches. I know she’s a great doctor, so she’s definitely capable of helping Estella with her fever.
A wave of regret washed over Catalina as she thought about the times when Roxanne had still been part of the family. Ms. Jarvis is smart, beautiful, and so down-to-earth. She never put on airs with us—treated us like we were family. But now, all I see is Aubree.
Catalina couldn’t help but compare the two women. Aubree, on the other hand, often shows up here unannounced. When Mr. Farwell isn’t around, she acts as though she owns the house, bossing us around with no respect for anyone. I don’t know what Mr. Farwell sees in her…
Lucian, meanwhile, seemed lost in thought when he heard Catalina address Roxanne.
However, when Roxanne corrected her, he couldn’t help but feel a mix of complicated emotions.
