Chapter 42
No one was surprised when Ms.
Emerson mentioned Gary’s name.
The monthly test was just around the corner, and now there was the added pressure of the Maths Olympiad.
The students exchanged uneasy glances, worried that participating would interfere with their test preparations.
They would rather spend their time focusing on revisions, especially since winning the Olympiad seemed unlikely.
Ms.
Emerson noticed the lack of enthusiasm and grew frustrated.
She had emphasized how serious the district took this competition, but the students seemed indifferent.
She scanned the class and saw that everyone was looking down, except for Nicole, who remained calm and composed.
Ms.
Emerson’s eyes lit up as she remembered from Nicole’s profile that she had participated in a Maths Olympiad at her previous school.
She asked, “Nicole, you’ve participated in a Maths Olympiad before, right?” Nicole hadn’t expected to be singled out, but she nodded.
Seeing her nod, Ms.
Emerson quickly added her name to the list.
“Great, you and Gary will represent our class this time.
Don’t forget to attend training every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon at the lecture hall.
There will be a teacher guiding you both.”
Nicole didn’t seem particularly interested, as it wasn’t much different from the other classes she attended.
Ms.
Emerson took her silence as agreement and let out a relieved sigh.
She had been worried that Nicole might refuse, but everything had gone smoothly, making her more inclined to favor Nicole.
When recess began, Bradley, looking concerned, rushed over.
“Nicole, did you really agree to join the competition? I heard this round is going to be tough.
Didn’t you notice no one else wants to participate?” Nicole replied calmly, “It’ll be nice to kill some time.” Bradley remembered that Nicole had answered all the questions correctly the last time and exclaimed, “Right, normal papers are too easy for you.
Competitions are much more interesting and challenging!”
Nicole didn’t bother to respond.
To her, even the competition questions felt like regular test papers.
It was lunchtime, and Nicole began packing her books when she suddenly heard someone call her name.
“Nicole!”
She turned to see Snow standing at the door.
When Snow noticed Nicole looking at her, she smiled and waved, signaling for her to come over.
Nicole hesitated.
She wasn’t particularly close to Snow and wasn’t sure what Snow’s intentions were.
Seeing that Nicole was ignoring her while everyone else was watching, Snow walked over and stood next to her.
With her usual gentle expression, Snow asked, “Nicole, shall we have lunch together?” The famous campus queen had entered their class, and all eyes were on them.
Snow, known for her gentleness and generosity, didn’t mind the attention and continued to present her best side.
The boys in the class whispered to each other, “Look, that’s the campus queen.
She really lives up to her name, her skin as fair as snow!” Many of them complimented her beauty, and Snow was pleased to hear the praise.
However, Jack overheard the conversation and sneered, “If you have bad eyesight, it’s better to donate it to those in need.
No matter how you look at it, Nicole is way prettier than Snow.
The campus queen title might be up for grabs again this year.
It’s not certain Snow will keep it.”
Snow’s face turned pale at Jack’s words, and she almost lost her composure.
