Chapter 87
Raine shot Nicole a fierce glare before quickly leaving, her humiliation evident.
Nicole didn’t let the encounter affect her, and neither did June.
They resumed eating as if nothing had happened, a quiet calm settling between them.
Nicole couldn’t help but feel a bit of admiration for June after witnessing her strength.
She respected people who stood up for themselves, and it was clear that June was no pushover.
June, on the other hand, sat across from Nicole, eating silently for a while before breaking the silence.
“Nicole, that bracelet was from my grandmother.
It was the only thing she left me when she passed.
I’m really grateful you got it back for me.” Nicole nodded, understanding.
She wasn’t too surprised, but the mention of June’s grandmother made her think of her own.
She remembered how Mrs.
Wallace Sr.
had given her many things before she left, things she had kept even when Gloria redecorated the Riddle Residence.
Nicole brought everything with her to the hostel instead.
June’s words carried a weight of sincerity, and Nicole realized just how much that bracelet meant to her.
June continued, “I’ve always acted cool, worried that people would find out about my background.
But now I see it doesn’t matter how I act.
People who truly have money can see right through me.
There will always be people who look down on me, but I’ve decided to just be myself.
This backpack may only be worth 50 dollars, but there’s no shame in it.
It’s the people who don’t have money but flaunt million-dollar brands that are truly ashamed.” Nicole listened closely, her expression thoughtful.
June smiled, her eyes reflecting newfound clarity.
“You gave me the courage to do this.
I’ve seen how you’ve been talked about on the school’s forum, but you didn’t let it bother you.
You just kept being yourself, and it made those people look like fools.
Honestly, I admire that.
Your response made them seem like they were fighting over something that wasn’t worth fighting for.” Nicole, surprised by June’s insight, responded casually, “I’m just too lazy to care about them.”
June’s admiration for Nicole deepened.
She saw in Nicole someone who faced challenges head-on without backing down.
Nicole had taught her to ignore the noise and be true to herself.
June smiled brightly, feeling like she had finally found clarity.
“Thank you, Nicole,” she said quietly.
Nicole met her gaze, a soft smile playing on her lips.
She took out a small note and scribbled something down before passing it to June.
The note was filled with a series of numbers.
June took it, confused.
“What’s this?” she asked, looking at Nicole.
Nicole responded calmly, “It’s Samuel’s number.” June’s face immediately flushed, her heart racing.
She hadn’t expected Nicole to know about her feelings for Samuel.
She hesitated, unsure of what to do.
Nicole, noticing her uncertainty, spoke again, “Chasing after what you want isn’t something to be ashamed of.
It’s okay to have feelings.” Nicole had never thought about playing matchmaker before, but after seeing June’s bravery, she figured this might be a good opportunity for June to take a step forward.
June looked at Nicole, processing her words.
Then, her eyes fell on the number in her hand.
She took a deep breath, her decision made.
“Understood,” she whispered.
Just then, Nicole’s phone rang.
She glanced at the screen, surprised to see a text message from Jared.
She hadn’t given him her number, yet there it was, an invitation for coffee.
Nicole thought for a moment, then looked at her watch.
“Thanks for the meal, June.
You should take one for Lulu.
I’m heading somewhere else.” June, still holding the number, nodded silently.
