Chapter 69
Nicole walked away without acknowledging Gary’s words, her steps unhurried and indifferent.
Gary, initially ready to confront her, grew tired of the situation and left her with a few parting words: “You’re on your own.” With that, he turned and walked away, heading back to class.
As he entered, his face darkened, and his friends, Jack and Wayne, immediately noticed his change in mood.
“What’s wrong, Gary? Who made you angry?” Jack asked, his voice full of concern.
Gary clenched his pen tightly in his hand and replied coldly, “Nicole made a bet with Mr.
Kennedy, saying we’ll get first place in the Math Olympiad competition.
She has the guts to say that, but I’m the one who’ll have to clean up her mess.”
Jack and Wayne exchanged a glance, and Jack, recalling how Gary had been rejected by Nicole when he offered to tutor her, couldn’t help but feel frustrated.
“Nicole doesn’t know what she’s missing!” he muttered, shaking his head.
Wayne nodded in agreement, but Gary didn’t want to discuss it any further.
His usual lazy demeanor returned as he focused on the questions in front of him, furrowing his brows.
Meanwhile, in Ms.
Emerson’s office, Mr.
Louis looked at Nicole with a mixture of surprise and curiosity.
After a brief pause, he smiled and said, “How can I help you, Nicole?”
Nicole took a moment before answering, her voice steady.
“Mr.
Louis, I’m here to let you know that I’ll be attending other training sessions, so I won’t be able to attend your Math Olympiad class anymore.”
Mr.
Louis was initially stunned but nodded and accepted her decision without question.
After Nicole left, the staff in the office looked at each other, puzzled.
“Mr.
Louis, isn’t that the student who scored a zero? Why are you being so nice to her? You’re letting her skip classes just because she said she can’t attend?”
Mr.
Louis shook his head, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.
He had gone over Nicole’s assessment paper several times.
Despite the messy workings and the differences from the model answers, there was something incredibly unique about her approach.
He couldn’t quite follow her thought process, but he felt there was something extraordinary about Nicole.
A genius stood out not because of their perfect execution but because of their ability to think in ways others couldn’t.
Perhaps, Nicole was truly the genius among them.
Nicole, unconcerned about others’ perceptions, made her way to the cafeteria for a meal.
Once finished, she called Mr.
Ellison.
Upon receiving the call, Mr.
Ellison’s voice brightened.
“What brings you here, Nicole? Did something happen at school? Let me know if anything comes up, and I’ll take care of it.”
Nicole didn’t hesitate and immediately explained the situation with the three girls causing trouble for her.
Mr.
Ellison responded quickly, “Don’t worry, I’ll handle the three students.
Your dormitory won’t get a zero either.
I’ll make sure everything is taken care of.”
Nicole reassured him, “It’s not that serious.
I just don’t want my roommates to suffer because of me.”
Mr.
Ellison sighed in relief, happy to hear that Nicole wasn’t upset with the school and was still focused on her studies.
After a brief pause, he spoke carefully, “Nicole, Harvey will be back at school next Monday.
I was thinking it might be a good opportunity for both of you to meet.
Please…”
Nicole immediately cut him off, her tone flat.
“Mr.
Ellison, I’m preparing for the Math Olympiad soon, so I don’t have much time.”
Mr.
Ellison sighed again, understanding Nicole’s resolve.
He knew she wouldn’t change her mind easily.
“Alright, then.
Focus on the competition.
Don’t worry about anything else.”
Nicole simply replied, “Okay,” before hanging up.
Mr.
Ellison reminded her to take care of herself before the call ended.
Nicole’s expression remained unchanged as she put her phone away and walked out, leaving the conversation behind her.
